Liam Payne’s close pal claims drug use brought him ‘close to death’ several times before fatal accident
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA: Liam Payne, the late One Direction star, reportedly struggled with severe drug addiction long before his fatal fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
According to court documents filed in Argentina and obtained by TMZ, Payne’s friend Roger Nores alleged that the singer had multiple life-threatening episodes related to his drug use.
Roger Nores details Liam Payne’s drug struggles before fatal fall from hotel balcony in Argentina
Liam Payne’s struggles with drug use reportedly brought him "close to death" on several occasions.
Nores, who faces charges of abandonment in connection to Payne's death, claimed the singer battled addiction for years, requiring hospitalization on several occasions. He detailed incidents where Payne reportedly had to be revived twice in a two-year span, including a severe overdose in September 2023 that led to a three-day hospital stay in Italy.
The documents reveal Payne’s repeated attempts to combat his substance abuse, including multiple stints in rehab over the past year. However, Nores alleged that Payne’s addiction escalated, leading him to use harder drugs, including heroin.
In late 2023, Payne was hospitalized twice in London, with one incident reportedly requiring emergency resuscitation. Nores also claimed that in March 2024, Payne entered a rehab facility in Spain but left prematurely. By April, Payne had relapsed, once again requiring medical intervention to save his life.
Roger Nores, who is defending himself against charges of abandonment, insists he did everything in his power to support Payne. In his statement, Nores said, “I was a friend who loved him very much, who helped him selflessly in everything I could, who spent my own money to help him, and even then it was not enough.”
The claims mirror those made by Nores in a new documentary 'TMZ Presents: Liam Payne: Who’s to Blame?' He maintained that he should not be held responsible for Payne’s untimely death.
Liam Payne's fans slam documentary on his death, calling it ‘disrespectful’
Moreover, Liam Payne's fans have criticized the release of documentary calling it “disrespectful” and “premature.”
The documentary, which premiered on December 16, just two months after the former One Direction star’s tragic death, has sparked outrage across social media platforms.
According to The Mirror, fans are particularly upset about the timing, given that the investigation into Payne’s death is still ongoing. Additionally, they have taken issue with the inclusion of interviews from eyewitnesses and defendants connected to the case, which they say could compromise the integrity of the official probe.
Critics have called out TMZ for its handling of Payne’s death, with one fan tweeting, “TMZ shared photos of Liam minutes after his death, gave a platform to two defendants in the trial, and has access to hotel surveillance videos from the investigation. How much corruption is at play, and who’s funding it? #JusticeForLiam.”

Others questioned how a media outlet could conduct its own investigation while law enforcement is still working on the case. “How can a TV show air their own so-called investigation while the authorities are still investigating,” another fan wrote.

One fan shared, “What absolutely makes me sick is all of these platforms making money and fake stories off our Angel. Putting things out before the actual truth is even out. Just sick. #JusticeForLiam #JusticeForLiamPayne.”
The investigation re. the defendants is still going on, court cases haven’t even started yet. We don’t know more than what prosecution brought out and so all else they will come up with will be pure speculation. Hence I would never watch this and I find it very disrespectful@TMZ

"TMZ just needs to shut up and wait for the case to be investigated first...! Who gave them the authority to go and put out fake narratives about the kindest soul on earth, Liam! I hope Liam's dad is making a note of it all and sues everyone involved in defaming our angel,” one wrote.
