WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized President Joe Biden's plan to consider executive authority to address the worsening migrant crisis at the US southern border as "election year gimmicks," reported The Hill.

Multiple reports on February 21 suggested the President is planning to use several executive actions to curb illegal migration, which includes invoking a section of the Immigration and Nationality Act that would deny migrants chances to request asylum if they enter the country illegally.

Biden's decision stemmed from the failure of a long-awaited bipartisan border deal to secure the southern border at the Senate.

Johnson's criticism of Biden's administration's latest move deviated from his earlier stance, where he urged the President to "immediately take executive actions" to put a stop to the record-high illegal immigration.

Contrarily, in his latest statement, the Speaker said, "Now, in an election year, after the president has surrendered the border to cartels and smugglers, after tens of thousands of Americans have tragically lost their lives due to fentanyl poisoning after countless unaccompanied minors and young people have been subjected to human trafficking, and after millions of illegal aliens have been scattered by the Biden administration throughout our country — the President suddenly seems interested in trying to make a change using the legal authority that he claimed until recently didn't exist."

"Americans have lost faith in this President and won't be fooled by election year gimmicks that don't actually secure the border. Nor will they forget that the President created this catastrophe and, until now, has refused to use his executive power to fix it," he continued.

He further challenged Biden to show his seriousness on the issue by "reinstituting the 'Remain in Mexico' policy and ending his administration's abuse of the parole system, along with other critical reforms."

Addressing the crisis at the southern border has dominated ever since Johnson's Speakership tune started, and it entered a showdown between the President when the Speaker declared the bipartisan border deal "dead on arrival."

Despite GOP lawmaker's months-long demand to pair up aid to Ukraine aid with border security policy, the conservative Senators killed the Biden-endorsed border deal at the urging of former President Donald Trump.

Internet blasts Mike Johnson

Outraged over his take on Biden's latest plan to curb illegal immigration, netizens lashed out at Johnson for adhering to Trump's demands.

One user wrote, "Moses Mike is a liar and a fraud."

Another remark read, "What's with this guy, he days he wants border action, but when a bill gets to him he refuses to bring it to a vote insisting President Biden hasvthe authority to unilaterally do it. Now when President Biden says he may unilaterally do it Johnson is like 'its an election yr stunt.'"

"@SpeakerJohnson maybe if you weren’t such a coward, busy cowering to trump‘s every demand then he wouldn’t have to do it by executive order," a third individual added.

A fourth person said, "No you didn’t say gimmicks did you, if using gimmicks were a crime you would have a life sentence."

"As are your actions, or should I say non-actions, as you scuttled the bipartisan border deal because tfg and other MAGAs said 'no, it might make President Biden look good,'" read another response.
