NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Lily Allen and PETA are continuing to clash online following the singer's revelation about rehoming her pet dog, Mary.

The back-and-forth clash comes after PETA criticized Allen after she shared that she returned Mary to an animal shelter because the dog chewed up her and her children's passports and visas.

PETA members slammed the 'Smile' singer's decision to return her pet dog to a shelter.

In addition to sending a letter, PETA also sent Allen a mechanical toy dog, as per Mirror.

Elisa Allen from PETA remarked, “It really is the only animal you should bring into your home. Dogs should never be treated as accessories to be discarded when they become inconvenient."

PETA's official X (formerly Twitter) account also took aim at Allen, criticizing her on the platform.

The post read, “As someone high profile with a platform, what you say matters. Laughing about this ‘f**king’ dog being sent back sends a dangerous message. Every move is traumatic to a homeless dog who then can never expect this home is forever."

However, Allen did not let it go as she reshared PETA’s tweet with the reply, “Nineteen Eighty Paws,” alluding to George Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four'.

It was on the August 19 episode of her 'Miss Me?' podcast, that the wife of 'Stranger Things' actor David Harbour detailed why she decided to rehome her dog, Mary.

Allen allegedly explained that she "tried very hard" but it "just didn't work out," with Mary eating some of her family's passports being "the straw that broke the camel's back."

While Allen felt it was the best choice for her, PETA wrote on X in one post: "YOU laughed when speaking about abandoning Mary and ruined this poor dog's life. She thought she had a loving forever home before you tossed her out, calling her 'that f**king dog' who 'ruined my life'. Shame on you. You don't deserve even the toy dog we sent you."

In response, Lily wrote: “People laugh when they talk about painful things all the time, it's quite normal. I've clarified that we didn't abandon her and that she was rehomed with people we knew almost immediately."

She continued: "Why are you perpetuating lies? What kind of animal welfare charity tries to shame someone for wanting to improve the welfare of an animal.”

Lily Allen reveals how her dog 'ruined her life'

Lily Allen took to X on August 25 (6 days after her revelation on the podcast) to respond to the feud with PETA and the severe backlash that she had received.

She wrote, "We tried very hard and for a very long time but the passports were the straw that broke the camels back" This is the part of the podcast that the tabloids decided not to quote in their articles about me "dumping my puppy" People have been furiously reacting to a deliberately distorted cobbling together of quotes designed to make people angry and as a result, I've received some really abhorrent messages including death threats, some of the most disgusting comments have been all over my social media channels, and i'm really not surprised because this is exactly what those articles are designed to do."

Allen further clarified the situation surrounding her decision to rehome her dog, Mary, months after her May 2021 adoption.

She explained, "We rescued our puppy Mary from a shelter in NY and we loved her very much, BUT she developed pretty severe separation anxiety and would act out in all manner of ways."

Allen added that Mary couldn’t be left alone for more than 10 minutes despite receiving three long walks a day, two with the family and one with a local dog walker."

"We couldn't meet Mary's needs and her happiness and welfare were central to us making that decision, as difficult as it was."

Her post read, "It is distortion, and all you are doing by engaging with these stories is making more money for people who profit from sewing division and tearing us all apart. In the same way that misinformed people acted on distorted propaganda that led to the racially driven xenophobic riots we've seen recently in the UK, it's just all so toxic and I know that we can do better."

She also wrote, "Also thank you to @peta for adding fuel to the fire. Very responsible of you," on the same day.

Lily Allen, now living in New York with her husband and her daughters, admitted on her podcast that adopting her dog Mary "ruined her life" after the pet ate their passports, preventing her children from seeing their father for months.

Despite trying hard with Mary, Allen said the passports were "the straw that broke the camel's back" and replacing the documents was a "logistical nightmare.
