Manhunt underway after Virginia deputy killed in welfare check shooting, $10K reward offered
CARROLL COUNTY, VIRGINIA: A large-scale manhunt is underway in Virginia after a suspect allegedly opened fire on two sheriff’s deputies conducting a welfare check, killing one officer and injuring another. Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Logan Utt, a 31-year-old military veteran, was killed during the shooting.
The incident occurred on Friday, May 29, at a residence in Carroll County after deputies responded to a request from a family member for a welfare check. Officials say the suspect, identified as Michael Puckett, fled after the exchange of gunfire and remains at large.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 9:26 pm on May 29 after receiving a welfare check request. Authorities said the deputies made contact with Puckett upon arrival. During the encounter, Puckett allegedly opened fire on both officers.
Utt sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. A second deputy was hit in his ballistic vest and survived the attack. Officials said the wounded deputy is receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Sheriff Kevin Kemp described Utt as a dedicated public servant who joined the department in 2023 after serving in the military. “Becoming a deputy sheriff was a lifelong dream, and he worked every day to make Carroll County a safer place,” Kemp said in a statement.
The Carroll County Sheriff says Deputy Utt served with the force since 2023, and "was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished family member, friend and respected member of our law enforcement family."
