Mariah Carey summoned to deal with estranged brother in court weeks after mother and sister’s death
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Mariah Carey is caught in a family legal dispute after the loss of her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, both of whom died on the same day in August.
Instead of time to grieve, Mariah has been summoned for depositions alongside her estranged brother, Morgan, as part of his 2021 lawsuit, according to InTouch Weekly.
Mariah Carey's brother claims she falsely accused him of violence in lawsuit
A New York judge has ordered Mariah Carey and her brother, Morgan, to complete their depositions by January 31, 2025. The judge also noted that the 55-year-old record producer “reserves the right to seek limitations on the scope of discovery.”
Morgan filed a lawsuit against the 'It's a Wrap' singer three years ago, accusing her of misrepresenting him in her 2020 memoir, 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey.'
In her memoir, she wrote, “It took twelve cops to pull my brother and father apart. The big bodies of men, all entangled like a swirling hurricane, crashed loudly into the living room. I was a little girl with very few memories of a big brother who protected me.”
“More often, I felt I had to protect myself from him, and sometimes I would find myself protecting my mother from him too,” she noted.
Another excerpt from the book read, “Suddenly there was a loud, sharp noise, like an actual gunshot. My brother had pushed my mother with such force that her body slammed into the wall, making a loud cracking sound.”
Morgan denied ever being physically violent with their parents or selling drugs, stating that the memoir damaged his reputation. He is seeking unspecified damages.
Mariah defending her writing, claimed that all the details were “true or substantially true.”
Besides, she added, “I would describe it as inner-circle common knowledge at the time that [Morgan] was heavily involved in the Manhattan nightlife scene and that he often was in possession of cocaine and provided it to members of the nightlife crowd that he associated with.”
Mariah requested the court to dismiss the entire lawsuit. Last year, most of Morgan’s claims were dismissed, but he appealed and was denied. However, the court ruled that Morgan can still seek damages over the portions of Mariah's book related to the drug dealing allegations.
