WASHINGTON, DC: Arizona Sen Mark Kelly sparked confusion regarding his chances of being Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate when he put up and swiftly deleted a social media post where he said his mission now was to "serve Arizonans."

On Sunday, August 4, the retired astronaut and Navy captain hinted about his veepstakes on an X (formerly Twitter) post, signaling he may no longer be a contender for the Democratic nominee's running mate.

The now-deleted post read, "My background is a bit different than most politicians. I spent my life serving in the Navy and at NASA, where the mission always comes first. Now my mission is serving Arizonans," according to the New York Post

Speculations regarding the potential vice presidential pick have been rife since President Joe Biden exited the 2024 race and passed the torch to Harris on July 21. The vice president has secured enough delegates to become the party nominee at the upcoming Democratic National Committee through a virtual roll call.

Arizona Sen Mark Kelly leaves less room for speculation in follow-up post

In a subsequent post, Mark Kelly wrote, "Whether it was from my time in the Navy and at NASA, serving in the United States Senate, or visiting our troops overseas: I've learned that when your country asks you to serve, you always answer the call," along with a photo of him conversing with members of the Army.

The Arizona senator is one of the several candidates looking to run on the Democratic ticket with Harris against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate Ohio Sen JD Vance.

Kelly was set to be interviewed by the Harris at her Washington, DC residence on Sunday, as per Reuters. The Democratic nominee may announce her vice presidential pick as soon as Monday.

Other top contenders likely competing for Democratic running mate include Kentucky Gov Andy Beshear, Illinois Gov JB Pritzker, Pennsylvania Gov Josh Shapiro, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Once her running mate is announced, the two will set out on a battleground tour.

Internet ridicules Mark Kelly over his deleted social media post about his chances as Kamala Harris' running mate

Netizens mocked Mark Kelly over his now-deleted post about Kamala Harris' veepstakes situation.

One said, "Guess he forgot to check the voter mood before tweeting!" and another wrote, "Probably accidentally leaked he didn’t get it."

"Mark Kelly is the 'we are writing a VP character for a movie but he only has like three lines' option and that’s fine if he’s the choice," added an individual. Someone else remarked, "He sucks at 'serving Arizonans.'"

A netizen expressed, "Kelly has been a dismal failure for Arizona. He may have been a good astronaut and navy pilot but a zero for a Senator for Arizona," with one more quipped, "What had he done for the earth lately besides returning."

"Now his mission is to serve Arizonians? What's he been doing since he entered the Senate?" asked another person. One wrote, "Just milk it Markie. Keep wearing your space gear even though you say you are now serving Arizona."
