Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's one word that spelled 'disaster' in late Queen Elizabeth's eyes

MONTECITO, CALIFORNIA: From Megxit to racism accusations, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship with the Buckingham Palace has soured over an array of reasons.
But sources have now revealed that it was just their one word that sent a collective shiver down the spine of the royal family and alerted the late Queen Elizabeth to brace for a "disaster," according to the Daily Mail.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's single word that alerted Queen Elizabeth
With no sign of reconciliation, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been living away from the royal family since their decision to step down from their royal duties in 2020.
However, when they first announced their intention more than five years ago, it appeared that the couple did not mean to leave the royal family entirely, instead stating that they intended to "carve out a progressive new role within this institution."
Yet, a single, inconspicuous word in their announcement seems to have set the stage for an ultimatum that they would not be given a half-in, half-out agreement.
"We will continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties,” they said in the statement announcing their decision to step back from their royal duties.
According to the Daily Mail, the word "collaborate" is what raised eyebrows, with a source telling the publication: "No one 'collaborates' with the Queen. This is not one of those 'Kate Moss Top Shop tie-ups'."
This one word also alerted the late queen that the Sussexes, most notably Meghan’s agreement, would never work out.
"This is exactly why Queen Elizabeth knew this whole half-in, half-out version of royalty they were lobbying for was never, ever going to work,” the tipster mentioned.

"Harry and Meghan were a law unto themselves from the start, pushing and pushing the envelope to their own professional and financial advantage. Her Late Majesty was nobody's fool and knew that the chances were, it would all end in disaster,” the insider shared.
Meghan Markle's rude behavior forced Queen Elizabeth to intervene
During her time in the palace, the Duchess of Sussex suffered quite a few awkward moments and dramatic outbursts where the late queen was forced to intervene.
In one such moment, Meghan berated a royal gardener so brutally that the head gardener in Windsor felt the need to complain to the late Queen Elizabeth.
"The head gardener went to complain to the Queen and she told her off because she obviously didn't like people being rude to staff,” a royal insider told The US Sun.
The queen then drove over to Meghan to give her a severe reprimand, per the outlet.

Meanwhile, a different source claimed that Meghan "screamed" at a florist on a phone call for half an hour for failing to mention in a post online that the Duchess of Sussex was working with them on a bouquet.
Furthermore, earlier in 2025, an article in Vanity Fair claimed that the 43-year-old would reportedly be "warm and effusive" toward employees at the start before turning "cold and withholding toward the person she perceived to be responsible" as something "went poorly, often due to Meghan and Harry's own demands."
