Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham's once-poised-to-be grand friendship ended over unsolicited beauty advice
LONDON, ENGLAND: Victoria Beckham and Meghan Markle could have been the best of friends if not for some unsolicited beauty advice.
It has recently been speculated that the ‘Suits’ actress and the designer were once on the road to great friends but a few unwarranted obstacles left their budding friendship in tatters. Author Tom Bower has now chronicled the friendship journey and the breakdown thereof of the friendship between the two renowned women.
Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham’s friendship got destroyed
Author Tom Bower, who recently published his tell-all book ‘The House of Beckham’, shared insights into the breakdown of the two women’s friendship over time, per Life & Style.
“Only after The Sun reported how Victoria had given Meghan make-up advice did the relationship between the two ambitious women crash,” wrote Bower in his book. Before her wedding, Meghan allegedly received recommendations about beauticians and hairstylists in London. While this was kept secret initially, the news later went out to the media.
It is believed that though the former Spice Girl, 50 has reportedly denied leaking the story to the press, the information of the leaking of the news didn’t sit well with Meghan, 42. Bower continued that Meghan’s husband, “[Prince] Harry was ordered to complain to David Beckham,” which led to the further degeneration of their friendship.
The crack in the Beckhams’ friendship with the Sussexes worsened as the former England soccer star continued to maintain his friendship with Harry’s estranged brother Prince William.
The investigative journalist continued, “Ever since the World Cup bid in 2010, the two had enjoyed a good relationship,” adding, “For the Sussexes, who were already complaining about their unequal status and wealth compared to the Cambridges, the sight of Becks with William was annoying,” he added.
Bower also maintained that Meghan allegedly grew “irritated” by the Bechkam’s wealth.
He wrote, "In Meghan’s celebrity world, ranking depended on wealth and fame. As a seasoned operator, Meghan deluded herself that her status in the royal family placed her above Victoria in the social pecking order.”
“[Meghan and Harry] owned five homes, had constant access to private jets, invitations to sail on yachts and much more money. And she was soon to be a duchess,” explained the author.
According to the author, Meghan’s wedding with Harry took place in the middle of their rocky friendship with the Beckhams, as is evident from the nature of the invitation the soccer royalty gained.
While Victoria and David Beckham were invited to the wedding, they were allegedly snubbed at the exclusive dinner party that was hosted afterward. The rift between the two families came to the fore clearly when Prince Harry and Meghan were not invited to the wedding of David and Victoria’s son Brooklyn Beckham and wife Nicola Peltz in 2022.
Bower wrote that on the other hand, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton were invited but they declined the invitation gracefully.
Meghan Markle wanted freebies from Victoria Beckham
Bower further mentioned in his book that before the souring of their friendship, Meghan allegedly requested complimentary fashion items from Victoria, who is a renowned fashion designer. The Duchess of Sussex’s request for freebies including clothes and handbags was, however, denied by the Buckingham Palace as it violated their rules.
