Meghan Markle labeled 'delusional' for comparing herself to the Obamas over new Netflix deal

WASHINGTON, DC: Meghan Markle tried to put a positive spin on Netflix scaling back their expensive deal by comparing her and Prince Harry’s arrangement with the streaming giant to Barack and Michelle Obama’s contract with their production company, Higher Ground.

“My husband and I were in an overall deal with Netflix then, not dissimilar to Higher Ground and the Obamas’ deal," she said at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit. Markle described the “overall deal with Netflix” as exciting because it gave the couple “flexibility” to go to their partners first.

However, the internet didn’t take kindly to the Duchess of Sussex’s comment, and her comparison with the Obamas was widely mocked online.

Meghan Markle draws comparison to the Obamas while revealing new Netflix deal

The Duchess of Sussex created a parallel between her and Prince Harry’s Netflix partnership and Barack and Michelle Obama’s production deal during the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, October 14.

“My husband and I were in an overall deal with Netflix then, not dissimilar to Higher Ground and the Obamas’ deal, once that had come to its term, the extension of it, which was such an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership, was now being in a first-look deal,” she said, highlighting the new setup with Netflix.

Meghan called their revised deal “exciting” because it offers flexibility to present projects to Netflix first, while also allowing content that may not fit the platform to find other outlets. She praised the collaboration with her Archewell Productions team, saying it has inspired them to create thoughtful content.

"Which is also exciting because it gives us flexibility to go to our partners first, then at the same time, shop content that might not be the right fit for Netflix but has a home somewhere else," Markle said.

Netflix offered Prince Harry and Meghan Markle a brief opportunity to continue their partnership as their contract nears its end later this year.

Meanwhile, Barack and Michelle Obama founded Higher Ground in 2018. The production company moved from an exclusive Netflix deal to a multi-year first-look arrangement, which gives Netflix first access to their projects but allows them to pitch elsewhere.

Internet mocks Meghan Markle for comparing herself to the Obamas

As soon as Meghan Markle shared her opinion, social media couldn’t resist mocking and making fun of her.

"She’s teaching us how to wrap gifts again, guys! She couldn’t resist name-dropping the Obamas when talking about her much downgraded ‘first-look’ Netflix deal. Clearly, she knows the deal’s a dud, so she tossed in the Obama name clout to prop it up," someone said.

"Markle latest: ‘My [dunce] husband and I [a talentless and delusional old phoney who lies all the time] were in an overall deal with Netflix then, not dissimilar to Higher Ground and the Obamas’ deal. She's an utter fantasist, isn't she,’ said another user.

"Comparing Archewell to the Obamas’ Higher Ground is like comparing a school play to a Spielberg production. One created award-winning documentaries; the other created a word salad about finding inspiration in… themselves. Meghan’s fantasy world must have its own zip code by now," said another user.

Another user shared, "She had to throw some big names in there to prove she’s in ‘important’ company! Horrid creature!"

"She’s a delusional liar who would be struggling for bit parts on cable TV shows if she hadn’t married the dunce," another commented.
