Melania’s face says it all as Trump pauses UN speech to shower first lady with praise

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, September 22, interrupted his United Nations speech to turn the spotlight on Melania Trump, praising the first lady for what he described as her work to bring displaced Russian and Ukrainian children back to their families.

But the president briefly lost track of where she was sitting in the packed chamber, creating an awkward and unexpectedly funny moment in the middle of his address.

Trump praises Melania on global stage

Trump’s UN address briefly became a personal tribute to Melania Trump when the president turned from her work to look for her in the audience.

While praising the first lady’s efforts on behalf of children affected by conflict, Trump stopped and asked, “Where is our first lady? Where is she?”

He then joked that he could not see her among the US delegation, adding, “Can you imagine I can’t see the first lady?”

The moment quickly shifted attention toward Melania as cameras picked her out in the room.

The first lady responded with a wide smile and a small wave, appearing visibly bashful as Trump continued speaking about her work. 

Once he spotted her, the president resumed his remarks and thanked her, saying, “Great job,” while noting how hard she had worked during the year.

Trump also highlighted Melania’s appearance before the United Nations Security Council earlier in 2026.

He pointed to her role in chairing a March meeting centered on children, education and technology in conflict, describing it as a notable achievement for a sitting first lady.

The March 2 session took place while the United States held the rotating presidency of the Security Council.

Melania’s appearance marked the first time a sitting US first lady had presided over a Security Council meeting. 

Trump clashes with CNN before speech

The warm moment involving Melania came after a much more combative interaction at the UN entrance.

Trump immediately noticed CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins among the reporters covering his arrival and questioned why the network was there.

“I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me! You shouldn’t be here,” Trump said.

“You should not be here covering me! You said you weren’t going to cover me! You shouldn’t be covering me!”

Collins responded that the United Nations had allowed CNN to cover the event.

Trump’s recent restriction on CNN applies to the White House, not UN premises, where media access is governed separately.

The confrontation came days after the White House barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House grounds.

The three organizations filed a lawsuit against the administration on September 21, arguing that the restrictions violated their First Amendment rights.
