WASHINGTON, DC: Amid the tensions in the Middle East, which have now escalated into the US, Israel, and Iran exhanging misslie fires and drone attacks, a rumor has been circulating on social media platforms that the United Nations Security Council has labeled President Donald Trump as an ‘international war criminal.’ Let us fact-check the claim.

Claim: UNSC labeled Donald Trump an 'international war criminal'



The rumor surfaced as a post on X, which came with a caption stating, “MAJOR UPDATE: DONALD TRUMP HAS JUST BEEN LABELED A 'WANTED INTERNATIONAL WAR CRIMINAL' BY THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL.”

The tweet has garnered more than one and a half million views with thousands of likes and shares. Those commenting under the post even appeared to believe the claim to be true, while some were skeptical about the viral claim.

Fact Check: False, UNSC did not make such a remark about Donald Trump

However, the claim is false, as the page that tweeted the claim is not credible and has made several such unverified claims for the sake of engagement. 

Although the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the US-Israel strikes on Iran as a grave threat to global peace, there is no evidence that the Security Council made such a remark about the president. 

A search on the official websites and social media pages related to the UN found no statement about the claim.

A search on Google for the relevant keywords also does not show any credible news media outlets reporting on the viral claim.

Antonio Guterres warns of escalation after strikes on Iran

During an emergency meeting of the UNSC, discussions focused entirely on 'Operation Epic Fury.'

Guterres warned that the airstrikes could lead to uncontrollable consequences if the situation escalates. He urged the international community to unite and pull the region back from the brink. 

As per United Nations News, Guterres reminded the council that Article Two of the UN Charter states that all Member States 'shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State.'

He said that international law and international humanitarian law must always be respected. 

On Saturday, February 28, President Donald Trump announced that the US had carried out airstrikes on Iran. He said the action was meant to stop Iran from posing a threat to others.
