WASHINGTON, DC: Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen criticized CNN debate moderators and President Joe Biden for not addressing former President Donald Trump's conviction sooner during the presidential debate.

Cohen voiced his concerns during an appearance on MSNBC’s Ali Velshi show on June 29, insisting that Biden missed a crucial opportunity to highlight Trump’s criminal history from the outset.

“In this debate, he allowed Donald to get very comfortable. In fact, they didn’t talk about the 34 criminal convictions until minute 45 of the 90-minute debate,” Cohen remarked. “I would have, right out of the rip, I would have come straight out and I would have started to talk about his criminal convictions.”

Michael Cohen's fallout with Trump and support for Biden

In May, former President Trump made history by becoming the first US President to be convicted of a crime. A jury found him guilty of all 34 felony counts related to a hush-money case, in which Cohen played a significant role as a key witness.

Having distanced himself from Trump, Cohen now supports Biden's reelection campaign. He argued that Biden should have immediately addressed major issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Roe v Wade, climate change, and Trump's legal troubles to disrupt Trump's composure.

Biden should have stated, “You will not hear a single truth during this entire debate and I want you to remember that when he’s answering these questions,” Cohen suggested.

Cohen advised that Biden should have labeled Trump as a “twice impeached, four-time indicted criminal” with a history of bankrupting his businesses.

“It’s also not just … what you say, it’s also how you say it,” Cohen noted. “There’s a specific way that you have to say things to Donald Trump in order to get under his skin. And that’s what Joe Biden needed to do.”

Biden's lackluster performance during the debate, characterized by a tired demeanor, led to concerns among Democrats and calls for him to step aside for a new candidate.

Despite these concerns, many, including Cohen, continue to support Biden’s reelection bid. "This morning I was talking to a friend of mine and we were talking about the debate and Joe Biden looking very tired, which is what he looked," Cohen said.

"Something I think the American people really need to remember here is that while Trump, during the day of the debate, was contemplating on what he was going to eat for breakfast or which golf course he wanted to play golf at that day, Joe Biden was still running the country, and he was tired, and this thing started at 9 pm at night. And, so, yeah, I get it. He is 80. You know, I get it. He was tired. Probably they should have done it earlier, but 9 o'clock was late," he added.

Cohen also defended Biden’s sharpness in a text message to Newsweek, stating, "While President Biden appeared tired, his mental acuity was sharp and precise. Contrast that with Donald, his opponent, who was energetic and replete with lies and inaccuracies. There is only one choice in the 2024 election for President and that is Joe Biden."

An article from Axios on Saturday cited unnamed current and former Biden aides who claimed that the president is mentally sharp from 10 am to 4 pm, but tends to experience fatigue and verbal missteps outside of this timeframe.

Social media backlash against Michael Cohen

Following his comments, Michael Cohen faced criticism on social media.

"Ahhh yes. Michael Cohen, the Great Arbiter of Truth," one posted on X. [sic]

"Cohen is a proven criminal liar," another wrote.

"So the convicted LIAR wants us to take his opinion as gospel? Nah! Biden had a week to prepare and still tanked," someone else added.

"You know they are desperate when the democrats are running to Michael Cohen for help," a comment read.

"Who would believe a felon that is still free only because he sold out his former client?" another wondered.
