WASHINGTON, DC: Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was immensely criticized by Democrats after she appeared alongside President Donald Trump during the signing of one of his executive orders.

The Michigan Democrat, who has previously built a reputation for being a resolute Trump critic, surprised many liberals after visiting the 78-year-old Commander-in-Chief at the White House.

While Whitmer went to Washington, DC, on Wednesday, April 9, for a private meeting with the MAGA spearhead, she ended up staying back for Trump’s signing of the executive order inciting investigation of two first-term administration aides who were critical of his actions, as reported by Fox News via the New York Post.

However, her presence during the signing did not sit well with her liberal supporters, who called her an “embarrassment” for allegedly siding with the Republican president.

Gretchen Whitmer causes frenzy with her White House visit

Gretchen Whitmer’s presence at the White House during the signing of the executive order did not sit well with Democrats, who called the meeting a “disaster.”

Even though the Michigan governor did not side with Trump for many of his orders, her presence at the Oval Office gave a contrasting impression.

During the event, Trump praised the Democratic leader on camera by calling her a “good person.”

“We’re honored to have Gretchen  Whitmer from Michigan… great state of Michigan,” said Trump, before adding, “She’s really done an excellent job… & a very good person.”

As reported by the outlet, the 53-year-old Michigan native has been working with the president to keep the Selfridge Air Force Base, outside Detroit, open and funded. Their joint projects also include tackling the danger of invasive fish entering the ecosystem of the Great Lakes.

Calling the issues “bipartisan,” Trump even joked during the signing session about standing alongside Whitmer and cutting the ribbons when the projects are completed. “We’ll all stand there together and cut a ribbon. Okay, Gretchen?” the president said.

However, Whitmer’s visit was met with criticism, as a Democratic operative referenced her visit and told NBC News anonymously, “Just a f**ing disaster,” before adding, “It feels like it removes some of the momentum she had as a politically savvy swing-state Dem.”

Edward-Isaac Dovere, a senior reporter with CNN, called the moment a “huge embarrassment,” before adding that the situation was intentionally set up by the president, adding, “She [Whitmer] went for this meeting with the president, and he used her as a prop.”

CNN host Audie Cornish added, “This does not look like the politics of resistance.”

Soon after her visit to the White House was concluded, Whitmer’s office moved quickly to clarify the purpose behind it.

They clarified that she was brought into the Oval Office “without any notice,” and that her presence was “not an endorsement of the actions taken or statements made” during the event.

Despite her strong stance of not supporting most of the orders passed at the executive signings, the Michigan Democrat appeared surprisingly sympathetic with Trump’s controversial tariff policy that has sent the stock market into a downward spiral.

Speaking at a press conference, she said, “I understand the motivation behind the tariffs, and I can tell you here’s where President Trump and I do agree,” before adding, “We do need to make more stuff in America.”

She clarified her stance in supporting the Trump administration’s take on strengthening the key US manufacturing sectors like cars, steel, and computer chips.
