MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: The Minnesota Timberwolves held a moment of silence for Alex Pretti during their game against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday, January 25. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but it was postponed after the fatal shooting of Pretti by a federal agent.
The NBA said the delay was necessary to prioritize the safety and security of the Minneapolis community. The game was later played on Sunday evening, tipping off at around 5.30 pm. The Timberwolves and Warriors are also set to face each other again in downtown Minneapolis.
Minnesota Timberwolves hold moment of silence for Alex Pretti ahead of Warriors game
The game night opened on a quiet and emotional note as the Minnesota Timberwolves honored Alex Pretti with a pregame moment of silence. The mood inside the arena remained muted throughout the game, with fans given little to cheer as Minnesota’s offense faltered.
During the tribute, an image of Pretti appeared on the big screen bearing the words, "In memory of Alex Jeffery Pretti." A voice then followed with the message, "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Alex Pretti that occurred yesterday in Minneapolis."
"We extend our love, support, and heartfelt sympathies to Alex's family, friends in our community during this difficult time. Please join us in honoring the life and memory of Alex Pretti with a moment of silence." The screen faded to black moments later.
About the game, the Timberwolves scored fewer points than they have in more than four years, their lowest total since a 104-84 loss to the Clippers on November 5, 2021. It was also the first time they scored under 100 points. Stephen Curry scored 26 points, and the Warriors won 111-85. The loss was the Timberwolves' fifth in a row, their longest losing streak in over three years.
Minnesota mourns Alex Pretti's death
Alex Pretti, a 37‑year‑old intensive care nurse from Minneapolis, was fatally shot during a federal immigration enforcement operation in the city. Pretti’s parents confirmed the man who died was their son.
This marked the third shooting and second death in Minneapolis this month involving federal agents, fueling ongoing protests. Large groups marched through downtown Minneapolis on Friday, demanding an end to the federal immigration operation in the state.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the shooting and demanded accountability, while federal officials defended the agent’s actions as necessary enforcement.
