Missouri judge delivers major redistricting win for Trump and GOP ahead of midterms
WASHINGTON, DC: A Missouri judge just gave President Donald Trump and the Republicans a big win ahead of the 2026 midterms, ruling that the GOP-backed congressional map will remain in place for November.
Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green ruled that Secretary of State Denny Hoskins followed the law when he rejected a petition that would have put the new map up for a statewide vote.
With the decision, the map will remain in place for the general election, although critics plan to appeal.

The dispute centered on whether Missouri voters have the right to use a referendum to challenge the state's congressional map.
People Not Politicians gathered more than 305,000 signatures, hoping to let voters decide the issue in November.

But Hoskins rejected their petition, arguing that Missouri’s Constitution does not allow voters to use referendums for congressional redistricting.
Green ultimately sided with Hoskins, ruling that the secretary of state acted within the law when he refused to certify the referendum petition. That means the Republican-supported congressional map will remain in place for the 2026 election.
The decision follows a special session in 2025, during which Missouri Republicans, under pressure from Trump, pushed through the new map.
With the districts redrawn, the GOP stands to gain an even stronger foothold in Missouri's congressional delegation.
The new boundaries are designed to give Republicans an opportunity to defeat Democratic Rep Emanuel Cleaver of Kansas City. Missouri's current eight-member House delegation consists of six Republicans and two Democrats.

The map splits portions of Kansas City between neighboring Republican-held districts and extends the remainder of Cleaver's 5th Congressional District east into Republican-heavy rural areas.
GOP strengthens House advantage ahead of November
The Missouri fight is part of a broader national redistricting battle ahead of November.
Trump and top Republicans have thrown their support behind redistricting plans aimed at boosting the party's chances of maintaining, or even expanding, its grip on the House.
Missouri stands out among Republican-led states where fights over congressional district lines have turned into heated political contests.
Missouri already used its new map in the August primaries, further complicating the ongoing legal fight.
Critics argued that allowing voters to overturn the map would throw the election process into confusion, as candidates who already won under the new districts could lose their seats if the lines were redrawn.
For Trump and Republicans, the ruling preserves a map designed to give the GOP a stronger shot at another House seat just months before voters head to the polls.
