WASHINGTON, DC: In a scathing rebuke of Republican leadership, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) launched a blistering attack on the Republican majority in the House, singling out House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for criticism.

Greene's remarks, made on Thursday, March 21, were spurred by a viral video depicting migrants storming the southern border and clashing with members of the Texas National Guard.

Marjorie Taylor Greene's critique of House leadership

"Our Republican majority is a complete failure," Greene asserted in a social media post, condemning what she perceived as a lack of effective action by House leadership in addressing the border crisis. She went further to express her disillusionment with Speaker Johnson, signaling a potential movement to oust him from his position, a mere five months into his tenure.

Accompanying her condemnation was footage portraying the chaos at the border, amplifying her call to action. "We have the power of the purse, which means we can control what the entire government does. Tomorrow Speaker Johnson is funding the government that has created this invasion. I’m voting NO! SHUT IT DOWN!" Greene declared.

This latest critique from Greene, a staunch ally of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, adds to a series of confrontations she has had with Speaker Johnson since he assumed office in October 2023. Previous clashes have seen Greene publicly denounce Johnson as "terrible" and threaten motions for his removal.

In response to Greene's provocations, Speaker Johnson remained steadfast, dismissing her threats with confidence: "I'm not worried about that. I got a job to do here," he remarked in an interview with CNN.

The timing of Greene's onslaught coincides with the impending House vote on a $1.2 trillion spending bill aimed at funding various government departments, including Defense, Health, and Homeland Security.

Mike Johnson defends spending Bill amid Republican dissent

Speaker Johnson defended the bill, highlighting its provisions to bolster border security measures and stem illegal immigration, insisting it would move the Department of Homeland Security’s “operations toward enforcing our border and immigration laws” as well as increase the number of border patrol agents and migrant detention beds.

“It significantly cuts funding to NGOs that incentivize illegal immigration and increases detention capacity and the number of Border Patrol agents to match levels in the House-passed appropriations bill and the Secure the Border Act,” he added.

However, the spending bill has encountered vehement opposition from within Republican ranks. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) lambasted Johnson and bill supporters for lacking backbone.

“This bill is an abomination. I don’t even have words for any Republican that votes for this bill,” Roy said, adding, “I promise you I will not be going out and supporting any Republican who votes for this bill for any position, ever again.”

Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon also joined the chorus of dissent, cautioning that the bill could undermine a potential second Trump administration, Mediaite reported.

Social media reactions

Greene's critique resonated with many on social media, who echoed her sentiments and called for decisive action against perceived failures within the party.

"Mike Johnson is a failure," one posted on X.

"Motion to vacate!!" another wrote.

"We are getting to the point of no return," someone else added.

"Shut it down, vacate the chair. We won't survive another 8 months of this," a comment read.

"It's time to throw RINOs out of the party," another reacted.
