Nancy Pelosi rips Biden, claims 2024 race could 'have been different' for Harris if he had exited sooner
WASHINGTON, DC: In her initial interview following the Democratic Party's defeat in the 2024 election, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sharply criticized President Joe Biden for not withdrawing sooner from the presidential race.
In an interview with The New York Times, Pelosi stated that Biden's delayed exit hindered the party from having a broader and more competitive selection process that could have potentially motivated additional candidates to join the race.
Nancy Pelosi says Joe Biden's delayed exit stifled 2024 Democratic primary
“Had the president gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race,” the experienced Democrat from California stated in a New York Times interview. “The anticipation was that, if the president were to step aside, that there would be an open primary.”
Pelosi played a pivotal role in persuading Biden to end his campaign following his unfavorable debate performance against Donald Trump.
“And as I say, Kamala may have, I think she would have done well in that and been stronger going forward. But we don’t know that. That didn’t happen. We live with what happened,” she made these remarks during a conversation with Lulu Garcia-Navarro on Saturday, November 9 episode of 'The Interview', a podcast series by The Times.
The Democratic leader stated that Biden's endorsement of Kamala Harris complicated the party's ability to assess other potential candidates. Nevertheless, she has previously expressed support for Biden's second term.
“And because the president endorsed Kamala Harris immediately, that really made it almost impossible to have a primary at that time,” Pelosi stated. “If it had been much earlier, it would have been different.”
Nancy Pelosi refutes claims of Democratic Party’s failure with working-class voters
In the segment, Nancy Pelosi, who has been reelected, emphasized the reasons for her party's loss in this election cycle. She refuted the idea that the loss was linked to the Democrats' failure to engage the working-class electorate.
“Bernie Sanders has not won,” Pelosi said. “With all due respect, and I have a great deal of respect for him, for what he stands for, but I don’t respect him saying that the Democratic Party has abandoned the working-class families.”
Instead, she emphasized three issues that she thinks alienated voters from the party.
“Guns, God and gays — that’s the way they say it,” she concluded. “Guns, that’s an issue; gays, that’s an issue, and now they’re making the trans issue such an important issue in their priorities; and in certain communities, what they call God, what we call a woman’s right to choose.”
