Obama assembles an all-star lineup for presidential center celebration
The Obama Foundation announced that several globally recognized artists will perform during the grand opening festivities.
The list includes Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Common, Marc Anthony, Eddie Vedder, The Roots, Bono, The Edge, Tems, and actress-producer Marsai Martin.
The lineup reflects the broad cultural reach Obama has maintained since leaving office and is expected to draw significant attention during the Juneteenth holiday weekend.
The grand opening ceremony will be livestreamed and will serve as the official kickoff to a series of events celebrating the center's launch.
Thousands of guests are expected to participate in activities tied to the opening, which the Obama Foundation has described as a celebration of civic engagement, leadership, and community.
The ceremony is invite-only, but the foundation is also hosting a free public watch party at Midway Plaisance beginning at 9 am CT. The opening program is scheduled to begin at 11 am CT and will be streamed on the Obama Foundation’s digital platforms.
Obama Presidential Center opens after decade-long journey
The opening of the center represents the culmination of a lengthy journey that began in 2015. That year, Obama announced plans to build his presidential library in Chicago, a city he called home for more than two decades.
Construction officially began in 2021 but faced delays as legal disputes and other challenges slowed progress. Now completed, the center sits on approximately 20 acres on Chicago’s South Side.
With an estimated cost of $800 million funded through private donations, it is set to become the most expensive presidential library project ever built. The campus includes far more than a traditional presidential archive.
Visitors will find museums, gardens, parkland, educational spaces, recording studios, classrooms, and a branch of the Chicago Public Library.
Exhibits are expected to highlight a variety of topics, including military history and former first lady Michelle Obama’s fashion and public life.
The center has been designed to serve as both a museum and a community gathering place.
Obama center opening sparks Trump comparisons
The announcement of the performer lineup has also drawn comparisons with President Donald Trump’s recent Freedom 250 celebrations.
While Obama's event features an extensive list of A-list entertainers, several performers previously linked to Trump-affiliated Freedom 250 programming ultimately withdrew from scheduled appearances.
Trump had announced a roster of performers that included Martina McBride, Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, C+C Music Factory, The Commodores, Bret Michaels, Young MC, and Morris Day and the Time.
However, multiple artists later distanced themselves from the event and pulled out of their performances.
The contrast between the two events has become a talking point as both Obama and Trump continue to command attention through very different public celebrations.
Trump has also been openly critical of the Obama Presidential Center. He previously described the project as a “disaster” and suggested it was significantly over budget.
Earlier this month, Trump shared an AI-generated image depicting the center in a state of decay, surrounded by garbage and homeless encampments.
Despite Trump's criticism, the Obama Foundation has signaled that there is no animosity toward the current president.
Valerie Jarrett, who served as a senior adviser during the Obama administration and now serves as CEO of the Obama Foundation, said Trump would be welcome to visit the campus.
According to the National Archives, there are currently 16 presidential libraries and museums documenting presidents from Herbert Hoover through Joe Biden.
