WASHINGTON, DC: The United States may consider deploying additional strategic nuclear weapons in the coming years to counter escalating threats from Russia, China, and other adversaries, according to a senior White House official.

Pranay Vaddi, the top National Security Council arms control officer, made this assertion during a speech on Friday, June 7, signaling a significant policy shift aimed at compelling Moscow and Beijing to reconsider their stance on arms limitation talks, as reported by Reuters.

National Security Council's Pranay Vaddi claims US may consider deploying additional nuclear weapons

Addressing the Arms Control Association, Vaddi emphasized the necessity for the US to be prepared for a potential increase in its nuclear arsenal.

"Absent a change in adversary arsenals, we may reach a point in the coming years where an increase from current deployed numbers is required. We need to be fully prepared to execute if the president makes that decision," he stated.

The US currently sticks to a cap of 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads, as mandated by the 2010 New START treaty with Russia. Despite Russia's "suspension" of its participation in 2023, citing US support for Ukraine—a move deemed "legally invalid" by Washington—the treaty's limits have remained in place.

Vaddi's comments come a year after National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan assured the same group that there was no need to increase US strategic nuclear arms to counter Russia and China's arsenals while offering talks "without preconditions."

The Biden administration maintains its commitment to international arms control and non-proliferation agreements developed to limit the spread of nuclear weapons.

However, Vaddi highlighted the rapid expansion and diversification of nuclear arsenals by Russia, China, and North Korea. "Russia, China, and North Korea are all expanding and diversifying their nuclear arsenals at a breakneck pace, showing little or no interest in arms control," he noted.

These countries, along with Iran, are increasingly collaborating in ways that threaten global peace and stability.

Vaddi pointed to the cooperation among Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, which includes sharing advanced missile and drone technology.

Moscow's use of Iranian drones and North Korean artillery and missiles in Ukraine, along with Chinese support for Russia's defense industries, demonstrates this growing threat.
