Outrage as Gavin Newsom endorses 'tenacious' Kamala Harris for president after Biden drops out of race
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA: California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was a highly speculated replacement for the Democratic ticket, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris' ascension into the 2024 presidential race after President Joe Biden's historic decision to drop out.
The 81-year-old POTUS announced on Sunday, July 21, that he was dropping out of his re-election bid following nearly a month-long pressure from dozens of Democratic officials and donors who considered him cognitively unfit for another term. The presidential debate against former president Donald Trump at the end of June was the last straw for the octogenarian's second-term dreams.
Besides Harris, Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's names had emerged as potential replacements for Biden.
Gavin Newsom touts Kamala Harris as 'better' choice against Donald Trump
"Tough. Fearless. Tenacious," California Governor Gavin Newsom said while describing Kamala Harris on X (formerly Twitter).
"With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump's dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America's Vice President, @KamalaHarris," Newsom added.

With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump's dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America’s Vice President, @KamalaHarris.
Becoming the frontrunner for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, the vice president would face Trump in November if she managed to secure the ticket. According to the latest national poll by NBC News, she trailed behind Trump by only two percent. In another poll by CBS News/YouGov, she secured 48 percent, whereas the former president stood at 51 percent. At the same time, Biden was five points behind Trump.
Harris, who ran an unsuccessful Democratic primary against Biden in 2020, received his endorsement soon after Biden decided to step down as the presumptive nominee and instead focus on the presidential duties for the remaining term.
"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it's time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," the octogenarian wrote on X.
My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best… pic.twitter.com/x8DnvuImJV

However, some Democrats are vying for an open convention instead of directly promoting Harris to the role. Senator Joe Manchin is considering returning to the Democratic Party to challenge the new candidate for the nomination, the New York Post reported.
Moreover, closest Biden allies like former president Barack Obama and Rep Nancy Pelosi did not give their support to Harris' presidential bid.
Outrage as Gavin Newsom endorses Kamala Harris for president
Social media users weren't happy with California Governor Gavin Newsom after he supported Kamala Harris' presidential run as they claimed democracy was at stake.
"Weak. Cowardly. Ignorant. Democracy was thrown out the window when your hypocritical party denied the 14 million votes of your constituents," one social media user wrote.
"Democracy at stake — which is apparently what you say before forcing the president out and then, without a single vote cast, anoint Kamala Harris as the candidate," another remarked.

"We the people find it absolutely hilarious that the Democrats preach about democracy however when the going gets tough the Democrats decide to disobey millions of peoples votes and hand pick a new candidate for the masses. How fitting," added another.
"So yall think the person no one wanted in 2020 is the person everyone will want in 2024?" asked one individual.
"Our democracy at stake? Like removing the duly elected Democrat Candidate because he can't win the election?" another person questioned.

"Who are you lying to? Yourself or to other people?" someone else asked.
"You oligarchs literally nullified the results of the Democrat Party primary and removed the elected winner. Now you will allow the donors to pick your candidate. You don’t know what democracy means. Communist Clowns," one person chimed in.
"Did you just endorse her? What a way to cave and pretend to show that the party is unified," another individual added.
