DES MOINES, IOWA: Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has come up with a new claim that it is the Democrats who want Donald Trump's candidacy in the 2024 presidential election.

Florida Governor subtly criticized the former President at the CNN town hall moderated by Kaitlan Collins at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday, January 4.

"The Democrats want Trump to be the candidate. They're going to talk about all the legal stuff, January 6th. That will be what the election will be about," DeSantis said while stating his opinions about what a second Trump Presidency would look like.

"You don't want it to be a referendum on Trump and the past. You want it to be a referendum on Biden's failures, on our positive vision for this country. I offer that."

He further took a dig at the former President, saying, "You need somebody that can serve two terms."

DeSantis is in a neck-to-neck competition with former South Carolina Governor and rival GOP contenter Nikki Haley for the second position in the Republican primary polls.

Ron DeSantis lists Donald Trump's failures

DeSantis, previously criticized for being soft on his attacks on Trump, used the town hall event to point out the failures of Trump's policies in 2016. He vowed that if elected in 2024, he would reverse all those failures and "get the job done."

The White House hopeful, besides accusing Trump of not being pro-life, stated, "We need a change agent in Washington. We need somebody that's going to go in there actually unwind the bureaucracy, which Trump promised to do and didn't do."

He added that the nation needs a President who could stop the border invasion by building a law which Trump promised to do, but didn't do, and willing to 'deport illegal aliens'.

"Donald Trump said he would, in 2016 he'd, have the largest deportation in history. He deported less than Barack Obama did in Obama's first term."

DeSantis pledged to hold Mexican drug cartels accountable for the thousands of American deaths they cause, vowing to address the carnage in the country.

"When I'm President, we're going to designate them as foreign terrorist organizations. Donald Trump had an opportunity to do that. He didn't do it. I will."

Internet reacts to Ron DeSantis' remarks

Internet ridiculed and slammed the Florida Governor for arguing the Democrat's desire to keep Trump in the race.

Many questioned it, pointing out the former President's ongoing obstacles to the presidential bid in Colorado and Maine, barring his candidacy in the primary ballot.

One user wrote, "Pick a narrative, you said Democrats are blocking Trump from the ballot, now, they want him in ? Are you even staying on the same narrative for more than a day, DeLoser?"

Another user mocked his remarks, saying, "Right! Because the Democrats are working tirelessly on keeping Trump on the ballot in Colorado and Maine."

"And yet they're trying to prosecute Trump to keep him completely off the ballot.... DeSantis is not the one that they're afraid of," read a third reaction.

A fourth user added, "Desantis is cracking due to his bad poll numbers." Another response read, "Sell out Ron!"

One user slammed the presidential hopeful, saying, "Go back to FLORIDA, you'll NEVER be President. RINO."

"Sounds like you're making it a referendum on Trump..." said another user.
