LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Rachel Maddow sparked outrage as he called the Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in gay rights history, a "riot by trans people."

Her comments come on the heels of the National Park Service website removing references to transgender people from the page dedicated to the Stonewall National Monument.

Soon after Maddow's segment aired, Fred Sargeant, a gay activist who was part of the 1969 riots, accused the MSNBC host of misrepresenting the history of the pivotal event by taking to X (formerly Twitter).

Gay activist Fred Sargeant accuses Rachel Maddow of distorting the history of the Stonewall Riots

During a discussion about the removal of references to trans people from the National Park Service website, Rachel Maddow, 51, claimed that the Stonewall National Monument "commemorates a riot by trans people." She compared this to saying, "It's like telling Cooperstown they are no longer allowed to mention baseball anymore."

Taking to X, Sargeant wrote, "Rachel Maddow has said some weird stuff over the years but this beaut shows that she's never read a history book about the Stonewall riots and apparently only uses trans Reddit as a source for these things."

"How could any lesbian not know who Stormé DeLarverie was or what the makeup of the crowd was that night? Hint: it wasn't 500-700 transbians," he added.

Sargeant, a long-time advocate for gay rights, also co-led the first Pride parade in New York City in 1970, as per Daily Mail.

Joseph Jones, who goes by @JoeGayHistorian on X, wrote a lengthy response to Maddow's remarks about the Stonewall Riots and accused the journalist of brazenly lying about the history of the gay rights movement.

He went as far as to claim, "There were no trans people involved in the Stonewall Riots. It was a riot that largely consisted of gay men and lesbians. There were a handful of drag queens present, but those are gay men, not trans."

In his post, he added, "As a proud gay man who has been researching gay history for 40 years, I find it absolutely insulting to see a high-profile lesbian outright lying about gay and lesbian history and doing so to prop up an ideology that is directly harming gay and lesbian youth. She should be ashamed."

The changes to the Stonewall National Monument's website were made after an executive order from President Donald Trump, which defined sex as strictly male or female.

On the National Park Service website, the acronym LGBTQ+ was shortened to LGB, standing for lesbian, gay, and bisexual.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the removal of the transgender references, saying, "This is just cruel and petty. Transgender people play a critical role in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights — and New York will never allow their contributions to be erased."

One wrote, "Shame on her," and another said, "This is embarrassing, is she ashamed of her sexuality? Why support the erasure of a historical moment, by supporting the revisionist lies responsible for it."

A person declared, "Maddow is ignorant and seems to lie with ea$e," while someone else added, "Plus absurd false equivalence 🙄 zombie falsehoods."

"A riot by trans people? Erasing your own history shameful," an individual said.

"Is she ever right about anything? She keeps being publicly exposed for reporting lies yet continues to keep her job. It's almost like that's exactly what they prefer she keep on doing," one more claimed.

Another person remarked, "MSNBC does not care for facts. Facts get in the way of narrative far too often for their liking."
