NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins sparked a heated debate when she confronted Senator JD Vance about what appeared to be a double standard in his stance on campus protesters versus the January 6 Capitol rioters.

The tense exchange, which quickly went viral, saw Collins questioning Vance's calls for the arrest of campus demonstrators while he had previously defended and raised funds for some of those involved in the unprecedented attack on the US Capitol, as per The Wrap.

The confrontation unfolded during a CNN interview on Wednesday night, May 1, when Collins grilled Vance about his stance on campus protesters and the January 6 Capitol riots.

Vance had called for the arrest of campus protesters, prompting Collins to question his previous defense of the rioters who stormed the Capitol.

The anchor quoted Vance's assertion that "you can police people for violating the law," then questioned if he agreed that "people who break in and vandalize a building should be prosecuted."

Vance initially responded with a firm "Exactly," but Collins swiftly followed up by reminding him of his previous defense of the Capitol rioters, stating, "I'm just checking because you did help raise money for people who did so on January 6th, which was, you know, impeding an official proceeding, breaking into a building that they weren't allowed to be in and vandalizing the Capitol."

Visibly agitated, Vance dismissed Collins' line of questioning as "the obsession of the national media to talk about what happened two years ago, three years ago."

However, the anchor firmly asserted that she was merely "seeing if it's a double standard."

Vance attempted to clarify his stance, stating, "If you beat up a cop, of course, you deserve to go to prison. If you violated the law, you should suffer the consequences."

He then pivoted to criticize the perceived harsh treatment of some January 6 protesters, claiming, "There are people who protested on January the 6th who have had the complete weight of the Justice Department thrown at them when at worst, they're accused of misdemeanors."

While acknowledging that "there are people who are accused of worse offenses, and that's a problem."

Vance criticized what he saw as unfair handling of January 6 protesters compared to Black Lives Matter demonstrators, asserting, "You can't have Black Lives Matter protesters who rioted and vandalized go free when you have people who were actually peacefully protesting on January the 6th, who have the book thrown at them."
