Death certificates detail Rob and Michele Reiner killings
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office officially released the death certificates on Tuesday, December 23, supporting previous reports regarding the nature of the couple’s deaths.
According to the documents, both Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70, died from "multiple sharp force injuries" inflicted "with knife, by another."
While first responders arrived at the family home at 3:30 pm on December 14, the certificates list the official times of death as 3:45 pm for Rob and 3:46 pm for Michele.
Notably, Rob’s marital status is listed as “married,” while Michele Reiner’s is recorded as “widowed,” reflecting the one-minute difference in their official pronouncements of death.
Nick Reiner charged with first-degree murder
Following the discovery of the bodies on the evening of December 14, the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was taken into custody on murder charges.
During a press briefing, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman detailed the severity of the legal action being taken against him.
“These charges will be two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders,” Hochman told reporters, adding that “He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife.”
Nick’s attorney, Alan Jackson, spoke briefly outside Los Angeles Municipal Court on Wednesday, December 17, confirming that the formal arraignment for his client is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
District attorney weighs death penalty in Reiner case
Hochman further explained the stakes of the upcoming trial, stating, “These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. No decision, at this point, has been made with respect to the death penalty.”
The district attorney also made it clear that if Nick is found guilty, prosecutors will not decide on the final sentence alone.
He emphasized that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will take the “thoughts and desires of the family into consideration” when deciding whether to pursue capital punishment for Nick.
It may be noted that the couple, who shared children Nick, Romy, and Jake, first met in 1989 while Rob was directing the classic film 'When Harry Met Sally' and married shortly afterward. In addition to their three children together, Rob had an older daughter, Tracy, whom he adopted during his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.
