Sam Stein predicts Trump’s Kennedy Center name will be 'reversed' under a Democratic president

Stein argues the move reflects Trump’s priorities on branding over Americans’ cost-of-living concerns.

WASHINGTON, DC: MS NOW’s Sam Stein commented on the controversy surrounding President Trump’s name being added to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

On the Wednesday, December 31, episode of 'MS NOW Reports', Stein discussed how the backlash from the renaming is affecting public perception and the Republican Party.

He also shared his view on what may happen to Trump’s name on the Kennedy Center in the future.

During the discussion, host Laura Barron-Lopez noted that “Two New Year’s Eve events at the Kennedy Center have been canceled, adding to the fallout that’s hit the performing arts venue since President Trump’s name was hastily added to it.”

Barron-Lopez then asked Stein, “There’s been a lot of backlash that we’re seeing to the name change. Do you think that this is going to have a big impact or be a bigger problem, not just for Trump, but also the entire Republican Party?”

Stein responded by saying that the situation can serve both as a distraction and as an indicator of something larger that could negatively affect the Republican Party.

He said, “The more that Donald Trump goes about redecorating the White House, the ballroom, and Washington DC writ large, the more he seems preoccupied with the ratings that the Kennedy Center honors program and having his name on various institutions, not just the Kennedy center, but the US Institute of Peace.”

According to Stein, this preoccupation with branding and visibility could lead voters to question Trump’s priorities.

Stein argued that there is a possibility people will start thinking, “Wait a second, why is he prioritizing this stuff versus my basic cost of living?” He suggested that this dynamic could be harmful for Trump’s image and by extension could pose a risk to Republicans broader than just the aesthetic modifications Trump has pursued.

He described what was happening as 'all for short term gain,' questioning the underlying motivation behind such actions.

Sam Stein on removal of Donald Trump’s name

Stein went on to speculate about what will happen to the president’s name on the Kennedy Center when a Democratic president takes office.

He further said that he believes the renaming will be reversed once political power shifts, “Of course, all of this is going to be reversed as soon as a Democratic president takes office.”

Stein added that he imagines that 'any time the power is going to change, they’re going to say, okay, we’re going to take that name off of the Kennedy Center, not exactly something we want.'

He suggested that the action was tied to Trump’s ego and short-term thinking rather than lasting legacy, noting that it makes observers 'wonder why he’s doing it' and concluding that the only clear answer 'is that it’s feeding his very sizable ego.'

Two additional musical acts have announced cancellations of their upcoming performances at the Kennedy Center. The Cookers, a veteran jazz ensemble, confirmed they had canceled two New Year’s Eve shows. In a statement, the group did not directly reference Trump or the Kennedy Center but noted that the decision had 'come together very quickly.'

Another company, Doug Varone and Dancers, also withdrew from the venue, canceling two performances scheduled for April. The group explicitly linked its decision to the recent name change, stating, “We can no longer permit ourselves nor ask our audiences to step inside this once great institution.”

Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell responded sharply to the cancellations, describing them as 'a form of derangement syndrome.'
