Selena Gomez calls Wondermind lawsuit 'meritless', plans legal action to dismiss claims

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Selena Gomez is pushing back against a federal lawsuit involving her mental health company, Wondermind, calling the claims against her meritless. The singer-actress and her legal team are preparing to take action to have the allegations dismissed.

Gomez and her mother, Mandy Teefey, co-own the company, which has faced claims from investors over its business operations and representations. Her attorney, Mathew S. Rosengart, issued a strong response after the lawsuit was filed on Thursday, August 13.

Gomez's lawyer, Mathew S. Rosengart, said the allegations against her were baseless and lacked legal and factual merit. “The allegations that Selena Gomez engaged in any way whatsoever in any purported ‘fraud’ or other wrongdoing are completely meritless, both factually and legally," Rosengart said to People.

"We will vigorously defend these false allegations and indeed are filing a motion to dismiss the baseless claims against her,” Rosengart concluded.

Gomez has not released a legal statement of her own on any of her social media platforms or called for a press conference.

Wondermind investors allege false representations about the company

According to The New York Times, the lawsuit claims the Wondermind team "falsely represented" the structure of the company. Investors alleged that Gomez and her mother solicited about $1.2 million from them.

As per the lawsuit, Gomez signed a contract stating that she would be "actively building the company as its head of marketing," but she stepped back and "ignored" the agreement.

The lawsuit also claimed that Fidelity and JP Morgan would allow Wondermind to provide services to their employees as a mental health company. According to the allegations, those arrangements "did not exist."

As per Variety's report, celebrity profiles, "a groundbreaking app," and advertising deals were promised to the investors, but they were never fulfilled.

The lawsuit also says that Wondermind "quietly collapsed around them," while “not one of its founders, officers, or directors said a word to the investors.”

Selena Gomez has continued to support Wondermind financially

As per People, a source previously said, “Selena has invested millions of dollars over the years into Wondermind to support her mother and their shared passion for mental health."

The source added that Gomez invested more money after being alerted about the company's most recent financial setback, despite not being involved in its day-to-day operations.

"Including when she was alerted about the most recent financial setback, and immediately invested more money as she’s not involved in the day-to-day operations."

The source also said that Teefey had taken the lead in supporting the company financially.

“To invest in the future of the company, Mandy has chosen to take the lead here with a personal loan to invest in the future of the company.”

With Rosengart preparing to file a motion to dismiss, Gomez's legal team is set to challenge the investor claims in court. The lawsuit and Gomez's response remain part of an ongoing legal dispute surrounding Wondermind.
