Selena Gomez gets candid about criticism surrounding her weight: 'It's really making me sad'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Selena Gomez has long taken the approach of handling criticism with kindness.

However, the scrutiny she faces, particularly regarding her weight, has affected her.

During a joint appearance with her fiance Benny Blanco on the 'On Purpose with Jay Shetty' podcast on Monday, March 24, Selena shared how online negativity has impacted her mindset.



 

Selena Gomez says weight criticism has 'made me a tad bitter'

She noted that while she tries to avoid reading comments, it can be difficult.

“I fall victim to looking at things,” Selena said. “It doesn’t add anything to your life. It’s just so difficult from the choices, the people you date. It’s like nobody cares about that stuff with men," the 'It Ain't Me' singer added.

The 32-year-old 'Who Says' singer continued, “I think we just carry a lot. My weight’s a big one too."

"Everybody just has something to say and it’s really making me sad. Not even sad—no I’m not a victim—but I think it’s made me a tad bitter. And I feel really guilty for saying that. But it’s true," Gomez continued, as per E Online!

Selena Gomez has been open about her fluctuating weight due to her battle with lupus and has addressed body-shaming comments in the past.

She recognizes that as a woman in the public eye, she is often subject to intense scrutiny.

"This isn’t news to anybody that women have a lot more intense feelings from their appearance, to what they are wearing, to everything,” the 'Naturally' singer said.

The 'Only Murders in the Building' star also talked about getting judged. “It’s the character that gets judged. It’s the way I’m not White enough,” she said.

"I’m not Mexican enough. There’s just so many different things that come up in my face that I just can’t help but see," she continued.

"I fall victim to looking at things. It doesn’t add anything to your life," she added.

Selena Gomez opens up on tuning out negativity and finding love

Selena Gomez has found ways to combat negativity, especially by staying off social media and refraining from reading online comments. 

“I’m just happier that I don’t have that. I had to stop after a while. And I still take breaks because I’m human and sometimes I read things,” she said.

”But I do most of the time ignore everything. I don’t have anything on my phone at that moment. So, there are ways to combat it," she revealed.

She has also learned to embrace the support she receives, particularly from Blanco.

“He’s the one person, you know when you’re saying those nice things to me babe, I believe him,” she said.
