Sen Chris Coons predicts Biden will 'respect' Supreme Court's decision on Trump's presidential immunity
WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Chris Coons (D-Del) expressed his confidence that President Joe Biden will respect the Supreme Court’s decision on former President Donald Trump’s argument over presidential immunity.
“I think there’s a sharp contrast between former President Trump and President Biden in terms of their respect for the rule of law and how they approach both law enforcement and our legal system," Coons said, during his appearance on 'Fox News Sunday'.
Supreme Court's decision on presidential immunity is still underway
The Supreme Court is set to deliver its opinion this week regarding Trump's claim of immunity, which he argues protects from charges that he conspired to subvert the 2020 election due to presidential immunity.
This argument, which has delayed Trump's criminal trial in Washington, DC, was previously dismissed in lower courts.
However, during arguments, the Supreme Court seemed open to considering some form of immunity for former presidents.
The final decision is anticipated before the court's self-imposed deadline at the end of June.
Sen Chris Coons doubles down on Donald Trump's hush money trial
Coons' contrasted Trump's handling of legal challenges with Biden's approach.
The Delaware senator referenced the former president's behavior during his hush money trial in New York, where he frequently attacked the prosecutor, the prosecution, the judge, and the jury.
“Former President Trump was in a courtroom in New York, where he attacked the prosecutor, the prosecution, the judge, the jury, the whole process so many times that before he was ultimately convicted by a jury of his peers of 34 felonies, he was subject to a gag order,” said Coons.
Trump's actions led Judge Juan Merchan to issue a gag order prohibiting the former president from making public comments about Merchan and Manhattan DA Alvin Braggs' families, jurors, witnesses, and court staff.
Earlier this month, Biden's son Hunter Biden was found guilty of three felony counts over lying on federal forms about his drug use for the illegal purchase of a gun.
“President Biden, we just saw evidence of this, this past week — his own son was convicted here in a court in Wilmington, Delaware — and he did not ever attack or criticize or question the judge, the prosecutor, the jury, the process. In fact, he said he wouldn’t use the pardon power,” said Coons.
The president has ruled out the possibility of commuting Hunter's sentence, affirming that he will "abide" by the jury’s decision and will not pardon his son, according to The Hill.
