MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) defended a federal immigration officer involved in a fatal shooting in Minneapolis, saying the agent was legally justified in firing when a vehicle moved toward him.

Mullin spoke on Wednesday following the death of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, who was shot by ICE officer Jonathan Ross during a tense confrontation caught on video.

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union with host Jake Tapper, Mullin said Ross had no choice once Macklin Good’s car started moving toward him.

“He had the right to defend himself once she drove forward,” Mullin said.

Minneapolis ICE shooting footage shows Renee Good confrontation

Footage of the confrontation shows a chaotic encounter between Macklin Good and a group of masked federal officers.

Officers approached Macklin Good’s red Honda, which was parked perpendicularly across the street, and repeatedly ordered her to exit. One officer is seen grabbing the driver’s side door handle as commands continued.

Instead of complying, Macklin Good backed up the vehicle. Moments later, after turning the steering wheel and reportedly being encouraged by her partner, she drove forward and made contact with Ross. That is when Ross fired multiple shots at her.

The car continued moving before crashing into a parked vehicle.

Trump administration defends ICE agent Jonathan Ross after shooting

The Trump administration has expressed full support for Ross, saying the shooting was justified. Officials claimed Ross acted in self-defense and accused Macklin Good, 37, of “weaponizing” her vehicle. ICE also released details on Ross’ injuries, saying he was previously dragged by a car during a June apprehension.

Vice President JD Vance said Ross received more than 30 stitches and suffered serious leg injuries. Vance shared body camera footage released by conservative outlet Alpha News, criticizing press coverage.

“What the press has done in lying about this innocent law enforcement officer is disgusting. You should all be ashamed of yourselves,” Vance tweeted alongside the footage.

Minnesota Democrats criticize ICE shooting as nationwide protests grow

Local Democratic leaders, including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, rejected the self-defense claim. Frey called for ICE to leave the city entirely, saying, “We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite.”

The shooting has sparked nationwide protests against ICE and the Trump administration. Speaking aboard Air Force One, former President Donald Trump said authorities would investigate who funds protest groups targeting ICE. He also criticized Macklin Good and her associates for allegedly harassing law enforcement prior to the shooting.

“The woman and her friend were highly disrespectful of law enforcement… But these are professional agitators. Law enforcement should not have to endure this,” Trump said.
