LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Amid the ongoing legal battle between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie over their French winery Château Miraval, Pitt's lawyers have fired back at Jolie's recent claims of past abuse, labeling them as a "misdirection and distraction."

Pitt's legal team filed a motion in court on April 5, requesting that Jolie produce nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) she has enforced with others. This motion comes as a response to Jolie's own filing a day earlier, in which she alleged that Pitt prevented her from selling her share of the winery without agreeing to an "expansive" NDA.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Pitt's lawyers aim to demonstrate that the NDA he requested was not excessively restrictive compared to ones routinely enforced by Jolie.

They argue that less than six months after Jolie sold her shares of Miraval, her lawyer proposed an even broader, mutual non-disparagement clause to Pitt in their divorce proceedings.

“For example, if Jolie conditioned her continued employment of an individual on that individual’s agreement to an NDA covering what they witnessed in her home — including her treatment of her children and Pitt — that would be highly probative of whether she truly believed the provision requested by Pitt was an ‘unconscionable gag order,” Pitt's lawyers wrote in court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Jolie's lawyers indicated in their April 4 motion that she was concerned about sealed documents from her years-long custody battle becoming public without the NDA.

Her lawyers noted in that filing that Jolie filed for divorce the day before the incident occurred, stating, "While Pitt's history of physical abuse of Jolie started well before the family’s September 2016 plane trip from France to Los Angeles, this flight marked the first time he turned his physical abuse on the children as well. Jolie then immediately left him."

Pitt was not charged as a result of the FBI investigation.

The Pitt source says, "This case isn’t about what took place on a plane in 2016. It’s about whether they had an agreement not to sell their interests in the winery and family home without the other’s consent. That’s what Brad and his team are focused on.”

"They keep using the same tired playbook year after year," adds a friend of Pitt.

Paul Murphy, an attorney representing Jolie, countered Pitt's claims, stating “For Pitt to equate common NDAs covering confidential information employees learn at work, with him attempting to cover up his history of abuse is, frankly, shameful. All she wanted was separation and health. She deserves peace after all these years,” he said.

The dispute over NDAs surfaced previously in June 2023, with conflicting accounts from both sides regarding the terms of the agreements.

As the legal proceedings continue, a hearing is scheduled for May 16 to address the ongoing disputes between Pitt and Jolie.

Angelina Jolie is facing a wave of backlash online after Brad Pitt's legal team responded to her claims of past abuse in court.

Numerous social media users took to various platforms to express their disbelief and criticism of Jolie's allegations. One user accused her of attempting to ruin Pitt, stating, "She ruined his marriage, nearly ruined him, and now seems to be upset that she didn't succeed in ruining him so she continues to seek ways to ruin him. Give it up already Angelina!"

Another commenter questioned the timing of Jolie's allegations, suggesting that if Pitt had truly been abusive, she would have spoken out during their divorce proceedings: "She can’t let go. If he had been abusive to her she would have screamed like crazy during the divorce."

Others simply expressed their desire for Jolie to fade from the public eye, with one user bluntly stating, "She really needs to go away."
