COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA: During a Fox News Digital interview on Thursday, February 1, Nikki Haley walked back on her statement regarding Texas seceding from the United States if she were to be elected president.

The former United States Ambassador to the United Nations gave a controversial response during a podcast interview with Charlamagne tha God on Wednesday, January 31, when pressed on whether she would use force against Texas in case the state itself ever tried to leave the US and she was presiding over in Washington.

“If that whole state says we don't want to be part of America anymore, I mean, that’s their decision to make,” she said while responding to the hypothetical question posed by the host of the podcast.

However, she later clarified her statement, labeling it as hypothetical and insisting that it would not happen, per a report from the Daily Beast.

Haley's statement was heavily criticized by many, including host Charlamagne, who interviewed her, and others who viewed her comments as reckless.

Haley later clarified her opinion on the matter, stating that the issue of secession was irrelevant until a state showed a genuine interest in pursuing it.

The Texas border issue

Texas officials and the administration of President Joe Biden are currently experiencing significant tensions, and Haley's comments only added fuel to the fire.

The Lone Star State has been in a protracted standoff with the federal government for several weeks over its decision to erect razor wire along the southern US border near Eagle Pass.

This region has witnessed a record number of migrant crossings in recent months, prompting state officials to take this brazen step.

The Biden Administration contested Texas's authority to do so and brought the matter before the US Supreme Court.

The Court subsequently ruled that federal agents could remove the wire, though it did not direct Texas to cease putting it up in the first place.

Following the standoff's emergence as headline news, numerous states led by conservative governors have publicly expressed their support for Texas.

Some have even dispatched National Guard troops to assist state authorities in implementing border laws typically handled by federal agencies.

Nikki Haley parries her way out of conundrum

The former South Carolina governor slammed President Joe Biden and suggested that he was the reason secession hypotheticals were mentioned in the first place.

When asked by Fox News Digital to elaborate on her views on secession, Haley remarked, “What should be the issue with Texas is, look, they are dealing with a terrible illegal immigration crisis. The federal government, Joe Biden, is not being there for them. We should let them do whatever they need to, to keep Texans safe and to keep Texas protected. That’s the goal. That’s what we want to do.”

Haley maintains that her recent remarks regarding secession were in reference to a prior statement made in 2010, wherein she also affirmed a state's entitlement to secede from the union if its inhabitants so desire.

Notably, states have only seceded from the United States once in history, a trend that began with South Carolina, Haley's home state, during the onset of the Civil War.

Despite this act of secession being widely recognized as one of the most odious episodes in American history, Haley remains resolute in her position that states should be accorded the right to act autonomously.

“I don't think government needs to tell people how to live, how to do anything,” she stated on Wednesday’s podcast. “I mean, I think that we need to let freedom live.”
