LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Simone Biles’ husband Jonathan Owens has always attracted controversy whenever he has spoken about himself and his relationship with the decorated gymnast who is competing in the Olympics 2024 after winning seven Olympic medals, four of which are gold, in the past.

He first received flak when he told Texas Monthly that he had no clue who Biles was when they first met.

He revealed, “I didn’t know who she was. I just hadn’t heard of her, and when I told her that, that’s one of the things she liked.”

Jonathan Owens once thought ‘gymnastics is not that hard’

During the same interview, Jonathan Owens also shared, “It took me a while to come to grips with how hard her sport was. When we were first together, I was like, `Man, you can’t come outside and guard these wide receivers. Gymnastics is not that hard.’”

But that was not it, fans of Biles did not like when the 29-year-old Chicago Bears’ player reportedly said, “I always say that the men are the catch. She did [pull me], though, because I was fighting it. …At the time, I was afraid to commit."

“I was like, ‘This is my third year [in the NFL], I’m trying … it’s kind of early, but, you know, it happens when you least expect it.”

Fans remind Jonathan Ownes that Simone Biles is a 'well-known standout athlete’

Soon people began slamming Jonathan Owens with The Cut tweeting, “You would think that, even for a professional NFL player, marrying Simone Biles is a humbling experience. And yet, that is apparently not the case for Biles’s husband, Jonathan Owens, who recently claimed in a joint interview that he is ‘the catch’.”

“He knew who she was. And what makes him a ‘catch’? Being on a football team means you are one among many. He’s not a standout, nor a household name. I never heard of him & I bet Simone didn’t either before meeting him. Biles is a well-known standout athlete, with skills he lacks,” a fan of Biles wrote.

Another one shared, “And her dumb**s husband still thinks HE'S the prize! Simone Biles is the greatest gymnast in the world and he thinks HE'S the catch! Men☕.”

Jonathan Owens responds to backlash

After the backlash, Jonathan Owens tried to make up for his comments by posting a photo of himself with Simone Biles.

He captioned it as “Unbothered 😂❤️ Just know we locked in over here 🤞🏽.”

But people did not spare him as a critic commented, “So unbothered you had to make a post? 💀”

Another one asserted, “Just understand that SHE is the prize.”

“Making a post about how you’re unbothered is LOL,” the third one added.

A fan of Biles questioned, “Y’all can be as locked in irl as you want but why would you speak so poorly of her to the public then??”

Another remarked, “Who y’all trying to convince? Us or yourselves….?”

“She makes more money than him, that better career than him, more famous and he's out there calling himself the prize HAHAHA BYE,” a comment read.

Jonathan Owens clarifies his 'the catch' remark

Jonathan Owens once again tried to make his point and clarify his 'the catch' remark in a Us Weekly interview earlier this month.

He said, “I have all my social media notifications off, so I didn’t even know for a while. I was actually with my mom and Simone whenever it came out, so, all the comments and everything, I just let them read it.”

“I try to stay off of it, and obviously if you feel like stuff is kind of getting out of hand, that’s when you reach in and say something,” the NFL athlete added.

Owens asserted, “I don’t mean to cuss, but like, damned if you do, damned if you don’t. If you say something, they’re going to say something; if you don’t say something, they’re going to say something. So, just live your life."

"People are going to talk about you anyway, so you might as well do it the way you want to.”
