WASHINGTON, DC: On Monday, May 14, the Biden administration stated that it doesn't believe Israel has been carrying out a "genocide" in Gaza, according to the New York Post.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said at a White House press briefing, “We do not believe what is happening in Gaza is a genocide. We have been firmly on record rejecting that proposition.”

Sullivan claimed that the White House believes “Israel can and must do more to ensure the protection and well-being of innocent civilians.”

What prompted the White House to declare Israel isn’t committing a ‘genocide’ in Gaza?

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan commented following the preliminary State Department report released by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken the day before.

The report posited that it is "reasonable to assess" that Israel has violated international humanitarian law during its conflict with Hamas in the Palestinian territory.

At least 1,200 people, including at least 326 children, have been killed and more than 300,000 displaced, after Israel launched sustained retaliatory air strikes after a large-scale attack by Hamas. On October 7, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza by land, sea, and air, killing 1000 people and wounding more than 2000. Israeli soldiers and civilians have also been taken hostage by Hamas and moved into Gaza. The attack prompted a declaration of war by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. President Joe Biden has faced the ire of some within his party for his support of Israel's mission to eliminate Hamas from the Gaza Strip.

This was in response to the deadly attack that the terror group launched on the Jewish state on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the death of over 1,100 civilians.

President Biden's detractors have dubbed him 'Genocide Joe' due to the high number of civilian casualties resulting from Israel's retaliation in Gaza.

This has led to nationwide protests, with some groups interrupting the 81-year-old incumbent commander-in-chief's events and taking over parts of university campuses.

The White House has attempted to balance its support of Israel with concerns over the country's plan to invade Rafah, a densely populated city in the Gaza Strip, out of fear that it could lead to additional civilian deaths.

The Gaza Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas, has reported that over 34,000 people have died as a result of the war against Israel, but the United Nations has not been able to independently confirm this number.

Sullivan added in Monday’s briefing that "we do not believe they should be dropped in densely populated cities" as to why the Biden administration had halted the weapons shipment to Israel, which was first revealed last week.

During Monday’s briefing, Sullivan also added that the Biden administration halted the weapons shipment to Israel, “because we do not believe they should be dropped in densely populated cities."

He emphasized that a ground invasion of Rafah would be a "mistake" since it would endanger civilians "without a clear strategic gain."

“We are still working with Israel to ensure the defeat of Hamas everywhere in Gaza, including in Rafah,” Sullivan claimed.
