'Star Wars would have flopped': Internet divided as Jodie Foster regrets turning down Princess Leia role
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jodie Foster - a Hollywood living legend and two-time Oscar winner - apparently had a regret over an iconic film role that she had to miss because of a different work commitment.
The 61-year-old actress, who recently appeared on this week’s ‘Graham Norton Show’ to talk about her role in the latest series of ‘True Detective’, admitted that she came extremely close to playing Princess Leia in ‘Star Wars’
What did Jodie Foster say?
Jodie Foster graced the ‘Graham Norton Show’ to speak about her character of Detective Elizabeth Danvers of the hit show ‘True Detective: Night Country’.
During the interview the ‘Nyad’ actress admitted candidly that she feels her life would have been completely different had she not passed on the ‘Star Wars’ role, per Daily Mail.
Speaking about her ‘True Detective’ character, Foster said, “She is just awful; everything you can hate – racist, selfish, and very horny.”
She added, “I can't say much about the final episode, but it is the best, it is extraordinary. No one sees that end coming.”
Foster then continued to talk about the role she had to miss because of other commitments, and added, “I got the part of Princess Leia but couldn't do it because I was already doing a Disney film.”
The role later went on to Carrie Fisher who not only appeared on the original ‘Stars Wars’ trilogy, but also reprised her role in ‘The Force Awards’ before her death in 2016. Her scenes were aired posthumously in ‘The Last Jedi’ of 2017 and ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’ of 2019.
Foster continued to talk about her regret and said, “My life could have been so different, and I would have liked to have had the hair!”
The actress was joined on the couch by Olivia Colman, Lorraine Kelly, Wanda Sykes, Austin Butler, Josh Brolin, Calvin Harris and Rag 'n' Bone Man.
Internet reacts to Jodie Foster's words
The social media users were left in disbelief as they shared the common view that Foster probably would have a different career graph, different from the one she has now.
One of the fans said on Facebook, "If she played Princess Leia then she prob would not have had a better award-winning acting career. Her treatment and preference for roles might have been on a different path."
Someone else praised her and said, "Well she’s had an amazing career and two Oscar’s and continues to act and live her life on her own terms."
Another fan said, "Wow .......Didnt know that ......But ??? Judi Foster is a great actor ......maybe too good to play Leila in Star Wars .....Who would have done Silence of the Lambs??."
"Star Wars would have flopped," said another fan.
"God, I’m so glad she didn’t. She’s brilliant as Clarice. As Carrie Fisher was our Leia," said another netizen.
Someone else added, "Silence of the lambs was a amazing movie . Much better then Star Wars."
"She wouldn't be the star she is today if she did ...so count your blessings... I think.. Panic room was the best she ever did ... Can't top that performance," declared another fan.
Another fan remarked, "Sometimes turning down a role could be a blessing in disguise. You'd be surprised how many actors went on to have better careers just because they turned down a role or lost it... James Marsters and Anthony Head are examples."
