Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce wedding guest thought Adam Sandler officiating the ceremony was 'a joke'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's celebrity-filled wedding continues to surprise fans with new behind-the-scenes details, including one unexpected moment that left guests in complete disbelief.
While attendees expected an elegant black-tie ceremony, many initially believed something was off when Adam Sandler stepped up to officiate the wedding. According to one guest, the crowd thought it was "a joke" before realizing the comedian was actually leading the ceremony.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's guest says Adam Sandler officiating wedding seemed like 'a joke'
The behind-the-scenes story came to light through Jonathan Thomas, CEO of American Century Investments and one of Swift and Kelce's Madison Square Garden wedding guests.
Speaking on a recent episode of "The Compound and Friends" podcast with hosts Sean Russo and Downtown Josh Brown, Thomas opened up about the initial confusion when the 'Happy Gilmore' star took center stage.
According to Thomas, the atmosphere instantly shifted from wedding anticipation to pure disbelief. “Adam Sandler officiated it,” Thomas revealed during the podcast episode, recalling the exact moment the comedian and actor walked down the aisle to stand at the podium.
The attendees assumed it was a scripted bit. Thomas added, “He came down, everybody laughed and thought it was a joke at first." The actor spoke for nearly half an hour, mixing jokes with sincere remarks and even singing a few lines during the ceremony.
Reflecting on one memorable moment, Thomas said, “There are two things that I remember distinctly, one is in your typical vows, the officiator says, ‘For rich or for poor,’ and he said, ‘You’re not going to have to worry about that.'” Thomas recalled, referencing Swift's reported $2 billion net worth and Kelce's wealth.
“Travis went first with his vows,” Thomas shared. “He probably spoke for 30 minutes, and I don’t want to violate his privacy, but I was crying, which I was trying to hold back. He made himself unbelievably vulnerable. And then I look around, and there’s all these 300-pound men from the football business crying as well, so I felt really comfortable to let go on it," Thomas added.
“And then Taylor went, and she also wrote her own vows. She probably spoke for 30 minutes, and it was poetic. It was really well done,” he continued.
Why Adam Sandler officiated Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding
Sandler wasn't chosen to officiate Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding simply because he is one of Hollywood's biggest comedians. According to those close to the couple, the decision reflected the genuine friendship and trust they share with the actor, who has known Swift for years and developed a close bond with Kelce.
“Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain,” Kelce said, adding that Sandler “is every bit as cool off the screen as he is on the screen, and that was a dream come true. That was awesome.”
On the other hand, Sandler shared, “Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell,” he said. “He’s like the guys I grew up with. When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school and just being able to laugh and say the things you want to say.”
