MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Former chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, Allen Weisselberg, pleaded guilty to perjury in connection with the former president's New York civil fraud trial.

During a brief hearing in the Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday, March 4, Weisselberg admitted to two counts of perjury in the first-degree felonies.

The 76-year-old ex-employee of Donald Trump wore a navy blue suit and a mask and appeared in handcuffs, per the New York Post.

Weisselberg admitted to lying during a May 12, 2023 deposition to investigators from New York Attorney General Letitia James' office and on the stand during Trump's civil fraud trial on October 10.

As part of his plea, Weisselberg will serve five months in jail.

What did Weisselberg cop to during Monday’s hearing?

Weisselberg admitted to lying to investigators from the Attorney General's office on July 17, 2020. The investigators were trying to assess the value of Donald Trump's properties and assets.

Specifically, Weisselberg lied about when he learned that Trump had fraudulently claimed his Midtown Trump Tower triplex was 30,000 square feet when it was just under 11,000 square feet.

He claimed he only found out about the inconsistent figures in a Forbes article in May 2017. However, the outlet had a tape of Weisselberg being told about the actual numbers in an interview before the article was published, per the plea agreement.

Evidence also shows that Weisselberg was informed about the inflated square footage in an email as early as 2012.

Additionally, Weisselberg admitted to providing false testimony during a deposition in May of last year, while taking the stand in October during a civil fraud trial in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement, “It is a crime to lie in depositions and at trial – plain and simple. Allen Weisselberg took an oath to be truthful, and then committed perjury both at depositions during the New York State Attorney General’s Investigation and proceeding, as well as at their recent trial.”

“Today, Allen Weisselberg is pleading guilty to this felony and being held responsible for his conduct,” he added.

The former CFO of the Trump Organization pleaded guilty to criminal charges after a New York judge found Donald Trump liable for conspiring to manipulate his net worth, resulting in a $450 million fine against the former president.

Previously, Weisselberg had downplayed some of Trump's “exaggerations” regarding his capital and real estate holdings as minor mistakes.

This latest guilty plea is the second criminal conviction for Trump's longtime trusted employee, with the first being in 2022 when he pleaded guilty to fifteen counts of tax fraud while working at the Trump Organization.

As a result, Weisselberg had initially been sentenced to serve five months in jail at New York’s infamous Rikers Island but was granted supervised release instead.

One X user remarked: "They all pled guilty and then cry about it on here".

Another user argued, "It’s great that ex-Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg is going to be held accountable for lying under oath. But what about the white whale himself? Donald Trump has yet to face any accountability whatsoever, yet all the people closest to him are pleading guilty or going to jail."

Another user said, "He only surrounds himself with the best people - then turns them in to criminals if they weren’t dirty enough already"

One user wrote: "The answer is because they all worked for a criminal. Any other answer is just denial."

Another X user quipped: "All his friends are liars".
