Tina Knowles praises Grammys for celebrating Black excellence

Tina Knowles took to Instagram on Monday, February 3, and penned an emotional post to commend the Recording Academy.

She wrote, “In years past, not that anybody cared I decided to not attend the Grammys. Not just because of my daughter, but because I felt like there was not equal respect or fair treatment for black artist.. that they could perform there, use the incredible talent , and make the Grammys have great ratings, or they could put the camera in their faces when they lost as entertainment.”

Knowles continued, “Give them a consolatory award to appease them. But I have to commend the Academy that in the most racist times with all the pressure being put on everyone to do away with or not celebrate excellence or the exceptional accomplishments of Black people they stepped up and did the right thing. It took a lot of courage and integrity to do that.”

She added that she was moved by the speech of the head of the Academy, Harvey Mason, and his candidness about the desire to change.

“So thank you, Grammys for being bold for being brave and for doing the right thing,” she concluded and added that Grammys “happened at the right time!”

While accepting the Grammy for Best Country Album, Beyonce said, “Wow, I want to thank God that I'm able to still do what I love after so many years. Oh, my God, I'd like to thank all of the incredible country artists that accepted this, this album we worked so hard on it.”

“I think sometimes genre is a Cold War to keep us in a place as artists. And I just want to encourage people to do this. Stay persistent,” she added.

Internet divided as Tina Knowles praises Grammys for celebrating Black excellence

An Instagram comment read, “What are we commending the Grammy committee for??? Just because they finally gave a black woman what was owed to her doesn’t mean they deserve a pat on the back”. They added, “The committee is still heavily biased against Black artist, and until the artist they’ve snubbed & disrespected are honored this one win doesn’t do anything but validate the hard work of one person.”
