NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: ‘Today’ star Savannah Guthrie recently admitted that there was "widespread disgust” in the studio after the morning show decided to cover a story about goldfish.

The 51-year-old captured the reactions of her co-stars, Craig Melvin, Hoda Kotb, and even crew members, saying that everyone is "trying not to lose it."

Guthrie took to social media and shared multiple reactions on her Instagram stories, all feeling, "cringy" or "disgusted" after witnessing the story on goldfish.

‘Today’ hosts cover a story on goldfish in lakes

Just recently, Guthrie, Kotb, and Melvin reported on a story about goldfish appearing in lakes.

However, they aren't typical goldfish. They are goldfish that are bigger than a man's hand.

"Some are more than a foot long and in extreme cases, weigh dozens of pounds," Guthrie said.

She emphasized that these goldfish are "extremely invasive and a threat to other species." NBC News correspondent Maggie Vespa attributed this phenomenon to the human error of fish owners mistakenly flushing them down the toilet, even when the fish are not truly deceased.

She said scientists recommend not throwing them back into the water, if caught, and instead, disposing of them.

At the end of the segment, the screen went back to the hosts in the studio.

Guthrie said that Kotb wondered how they tasted. "I did wonder because, they're carpe, right?" Kotb asked Vespa.

"We couldn't find someone who wanted to taste them, shockingly, but if we do we'll let you know," Vespa said.

Melvin cringed, and the others burst into laughter. Guthrie jokingly remarked, "Listen, Maggie, if Hoda invites you over for 'Tilapia' at her house this Christmas, just say no."

Vespa shook her head and remarked, "Mmm mmm. I'll be sick." In the closing moments, Melvin expressed doubt that many people would flush live fish, cringing once more as he exclaimed, "Blech."

Guthrie later took to Instagram and shared stills of her, Kotb’s, and Melvin’s reactions to the segment.

In the initial instance, Melvin sported a cringing expression, while Guthrie hid her eyes, and they both directed their gaze downward.

"Trying not totally to lose it watching a story about giant overgrown goldfish," she captioned the photo. In the second photo, she highlighted Melvin’s face, in which he looked disgusted.

In the third image, Kotb concealed her face from the screen, revealing a cameraman who shared the same facial expression as Melvin. The accompanying caption humorously noted, "Widespread disgust in the studio."
