Trump admin gives $10K bonuses to air traffic controllers with perfect shutdown attendance

The Trump administration awarded 776 FAA employees $10,000 each for working every day of the 44-day government shutdown

WASHINGTON, DC: The Trump administration announced on Thursday, November 20, that 776 air traffic controllers and FAA technicians will receive $10,000 bonus checks for maintaining perfect attendance throughout the 44-day government shutdown, which officials repeatedly blamed on Democrats. The payments, issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), are expected to arrive by December 9, just in time for the holidays.

The decision represents one of the largest mass performance bonuses ever issued to federal aviation personnel.



Trump-era DOT rewards employees who kept National Airspace running

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy praised the employees who continued working under enormous strain despite frozen pay, political uncertainty, and growing operational pressure.

“These patriotic men and women never missed a beat and kept the flying public safe throughout the shutdown,” Duffy said. He also criticized Democrats for disregarding federal workers’ hardships, adding, “Democrats may not care about their financial well-being, but President Trump does.”

DOT confirmed that only workers with 100% attendance during the shutdown were eligible for the cash reward.

“This award is an acknowledgment of their dedication and a heartfelt appreciation for going above and beyond in service to the nation,” Duffy added.

FAA chief Bryan Bedford hails workers’ dedication to public service

Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Bryan Bedford also issued a statement applauding the controllers and technicians who kept America’s vast National Airspace System functioning despite reduced staffing and heightened stress.

“I am profoundly proud and grateful for the air traffic personnel who worked during extraordinary operational challenges to keep the National Airspace System running safely during the longest government shutdown,” Bedford said. “Their dedication represents the highest levels of public service.”

Donald Trump pushed for bonuses and blasts workers who took time off

The bonus plan followed a Truth Social post from President Donald Trump last week, where he promised rewards for the controllers who stayed on duty and sharply criticized those who took leave.

“For those Air Traffic Controllers who were GREAT PATRIOTS, and didn’t take ANY TIME OFF for the ‘Democrat Shutdown Hoax,’ I will be recommending a BONUS of $10,000 per person for distinguished service to our Country,” Trump wrote.



He also warned employees who missed shifts, “For those that did nothing but complain, and took time off… I am NOT HAPPY WITH YOU.”

The administration has framed the shutdown as a politically motivated “hoax” engineered by Democrats while highlighting its rewards for federal workers who continued performing essential duties.

Bonuses follow earlier payouts to TSA agents

The announcement comes just one week after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem handed out $10,000 checks to TSA agents at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport who also worked continuously through the shutdown.

The White House said these payouts are part of a broader effort to restore morale among frontline federal workers forced to operate without pay. The 776 FAA employees are expected to receive their bonus deposits within the next three weeks, closing out what officials described as a gesture of appreciation and a message of loyalty rewarded.
