Trump agrees to 2-week ceasefire, hails 'workable' peace deal with Iran

The move hinges on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides signaling progress toward a broader peace agreement.

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, April 7, agreeing to suspend planned military strikes as diplomatic efforts intensified following talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The decision came amid last-minute negotiations and a proposal from Tehran, which Trump described as a “workable basis” for a broader peace agreement. The pause in hostilities is also contingent on key maritime and security assurances in the region.

Ceasefire after Pakistan talks

Trump said he agreed to delay the “bombing and attack of Iran” after discussions with Sharif and Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, who urged restraint while negotiations continue.

“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” The White house posted.

The US president added that the postponement would allow both sides to finalize terms, saying, “Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated.”

Strait condition and Iran response

Trump said the ceasefire is subject to Iran agreeing to “the complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz,” a critical global shipping route.

Iran’s foreign minister, Seyed Araghchi, signaled conditional cooperation, stating that ships transiting the strait would have safe passage.

"If attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations," he said in a statement.

Trump said the US had received a 10-point proposal from Iran and officials “believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” adding that the agreement could bring a long-running conflict closer to resolution.

Israel has also agreed to suspend its bombing campaign in Iran as part of a last-minute deal reached between Tehran and Trump.

Trump warns of bombing 'a whole civilization'

Trump’s announcement of the ceasefire agreement came less than two hours before the US president’s self-imposed 8pm Eastern time deadline to bomb Iran’s power plants and bridges.

It was a move that legal scholars, as well as officials from numerous countries and the Pope, had warned could constitute war crimes.

Just hours earlier, Trump had written on Truth Social: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.” B-52 bombers were reported to be en route to Iran before the ceasefire agreement was announced.
