Trump calls rare Camp David cabinet meeting as Iran warns Washington over military strikes
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid the fear of renewed escalation between the US and Iran following the US military’s "self-defense" attack on Iran near the Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump has reportedly called a rare Cabinet Meeting at Camp David on Wednesday, May 27.
According to an exclusive report by the New York Post on Tuesday, all cabinet members, including outgoing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, are expected to join the president at the compound in rural Maryland.
The announcement comes hours after the US Central Command revealed that American forces targeted missile launch sites and Iranian boats in southern Iran.
The Wednesday meeting, which will mark the 12th cabinet meeting since Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, is likely to discuss “recent successes of the administration, including economy and small business wins, Task Force to Eliminate Fraud highlights, and foreign policy updates,” according to a White House official.
Besides, the administration is also planning to bring its work on affordability and other public issues before voters ahead of the November midterm elections.
What is the Camp David compound?
Camp David is a 125-acre compound deep in Catoctin Mountain Park, guarded by US Marines, and is considered a secure location for delicate conversations to be held without unwarranted intervention from unwanted guests or media members.
The private camp, located near the Maryland-Pennsylvania border, approximately 60 miles north of Washington, is an additional perk for the US presidents, which has rarely seen Trump’s presence.
President Trump has visited the private Camp David 16 times over his two terms as president.
Marco Rubio says talks are underway amid fear of escalation
While it is not clear if the meeting will also discuss the rapidly evolving situation with Iran, the subject is expected to dominate the discussion after the US’s attack on Iran, followed by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei threatening American military bases in the Middle East.
Although there is fear of renewed escalation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Tuesday, said that the talks were going on and it might take “a few days” to work out all the details.
“It’s a lot of talking back and forth going on about specific language in the initial document,” Rubio told reporters in India. “So it’ll take a few days. The president expressed his desire to make [sure] he’s either going to make a good deal or no deal.”
