WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump wasted no time dropping one of his sharp one-liners when a reporter asked who had made it onto his naughty list during a photo op at the 48th annual Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, December 7. He didn’t pause for even a second. He simply replied, “It’s a long list.”

He delivered the line during a brief back-and-forth with reporters as he and First Lady Melania Trump posed for photographs. The exchange lasted only a moment, but it was long enough for him to lean into his trademark style.

Donald Trump’s playful naughty list remark steals spotlight during Kennedy Center photo op

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrived hand in hand at the Kennedy Center Honors, stepping into the spotlight as cameras snapped and reporters fired off quick questions.

One reporter asked, “Who’s on your naughty list?” Trump, without missing a beat, fired back, “Oh, it’s a long list. I better not tell you. It’s still a problem out there in the world.”

He kept the momentum going, moving from banter to broader comments about the country. “No, we have a pretty big naughty list, but our country is doing well with the hottest country anywhere in the world right now. And a year ago, we were a dead country,” he said. He doubled down again, adding, “We were a dead country that was laughed at all over the world with the hottest country in the world.”

The quick exchange even caught Melania slightly off guard. She smiled at her husband’s answer before slipping back into her composed photo-op posture.

Donald Trump adds his own flair to the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors

Trump didn’t just attend the Kennedy Center Honors this year — he hosted it. Rather than watching from the traditional Opera House box, he took the stage to lead the celebration honoring Sylvester Stallone, KISS, Gloria Gaynor, George Strait, and Michael Crawford.

Since returning to office in January, Trump has frequently used the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which carries the name of a Democratic predecessor. His involvement this year stretched beyond hosting; he also said he played a role in selecting the honorees.

When reporters asked how he prepared for the hosting gig, he kept it fully in line with his well-known persona. “I did not really prepare very much,” he said. “I have a good memory, so I can remember things, which is very fortunate. But I wanted to just be myself. You have to be yourself. Johnny Carson, he was himself.”

Trump agreed to host the event back in August. The night before the ceremony, at a State Department dinner, he said he accepted the role “at the request of a certain television network.” He also predicted that the December 23 broadcast on CBS and Paramount Plus would see “its best ratings ever.”
