WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump struck a cordial tone after meeting New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in the Oval Office on Friday, November 21, calling it a “great honor.”

Their encounter, which many anticipated to be fraught with tension, instead unfolded as a surprisingly cordial and respectful exchange.

Trump and Zohran Mamdani’s cordial meeting

Donald Trump had previously criticized Zohran Mamdani as a “100% Communist Lunatic," a “total nut job,” and had threatened to cut federal funding if he were elected.

Despite their ideological differences, the meeting proved far from hostile. When a Fox News reporter asked Mamdani if he had called Trump a “fascist,” Trump intervened with a laugh, “That’s OK, you can just say yes.”

Mamdani replied, “Ok, alright,” prompting Trump to grin, tap his arm, and say, “It’s easier than explaining it.”

The 34-year-old was also questioned about choosing to fly to Washington despite “trains being greener,” Trump stepped in again and responded, “That's a lot quicker too, in all fairness. I'll stick up for you.”

A few hours later, Trump posted on Truth Social, “It was a Great Honor meeting Zohran Mamdani, the new Mayor of New York City!” while sharing a series of photos from their meeting.

Later, when asked if he would feel comfortable living in New York City under a Mamdani administration, Trump replied, “I would. I really would.”

Zohran Mamdani and Trump's shared purpose

Donald Trump praised Zohran Mamdani for his victory, saying, “I want to congratulate the mayor, he really ran an incredible race against some very tough people, very smart people.”

Although the POTUS backed his mayoral opponent, Andrew Cuomo, he achieved a historic victory, securing over one million votes, a milestone not reached since 1969.

Mamdani also acknowledged that he and Trump “disagree on much,” but stressed that what he appreciated most was the focus on shared goals. "We focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City, and the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers," the newly elected mayor said.

"The better he does, the happier I am," Trump remarked. "We're going to be helping him to make everybody's dream come true, having a strong and very safe New York."

Mamdani highlighted the urgency of the issue, saying “that could transform the lives of the 8.5 million people who are currently struggling under a cost-of-living crisis with one in four living in poverty."

He expressed hope that together they can not just ease the struggle, but build a New York City where people can thrive and truly live, not just survive.
