Trump's allies worry Laura Loomer's extreme rhetoric and controversial past could tank his 2024 campaign
WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump's campaign is facing growing concerns as the involvement of far-right figure Laura Loomer has triggered alarm among those close to the former president.
According to sources who spoke to Mediaite, Trump's inner circle is worried that conspiracy theorist Loomer's extreme rhetoric and controversial past could damage the former president’s 2024 bid.
With Loomer's controversial presence and incendiary remarks making headlines, some Trump allies fear her involvement could alienate potential voters and create a significant liability for the campaign.
Laura Loomer vying for position on Donald Trump's team for over a year
Laura Loomer, a political activist known for her far-right views and conspiracy theories, has long sought a role in Donald Trump’s campaign.
A former Trump campaign staffer told Mediaite that Loomer has been vying for a position on Trump's team for over a year, but her involvement has sparked fears of chaos within the campaign.
"She is an extreme liability. She has no filter on her mouth and says hateful, racist, judgmental things. This is the exact opposite of what the RNC has been trying to achieve by incorporating new energy," the source said.
Loomer’s presence has already been felt in a controversial manner.
On social media, she has been vocal about conspiracy theories and bigotry, with her history including inflammatory remarks about 9/11 and the terror attacks being an "inside job."
Loomer’s behavior, combined with her proximity to Trump, is causing some within the campaign to question whether the former president is listening to the wrong people.
"The fact that Trump had someone with limited education who is a complete grifter on his plane, just proves he doesn’t take this election seriously. He shouldn’t be taking advice from someone who lost two political runs and is nothing but a grifter," said the former staffer.
Adding to concerns, Loomer was seen exiting Trump’s plane ahead of the recent debate, fueling speculation about her influence over his messaging.
Top-ranking GOP members denounce Laura Loomer's remarks
As Laura Loomer continues to stir controversy, members of the Republican Party have voiced their disapproval of her actions. One of the most notable recent incidents involved a racist remark Loomer made about Vice President Kamala Harris.
Loomer claimed on social media that the White House would "smell like curry" if Harris, who is of South Asian descent, took office.
The comment sparked outrage, even from fellow far-right figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is often associated with controversial rhetoric herself.
"This is appalling and extremely racist. It does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA. This does not represent President Trump. This type of behavior should not be tolerated ever," Greene wrote in response.
Even established GOP figures, such as South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, have expressed their concerns about Loomer’s influence on Trump.
Speaking to HuffPost, Graham didn’t hold back. "We have policy disagreements but the history of this person is just really toxic. I mean, she actually called for Kellyanne Conway’s daughter to hang herself. I don’t know how this all happened, but, no, I don’t think it’s helpful. I don’t think it’s helpful at all," he said.
Donald Trump appears to have certain level of fondness for Laura Loomer
Despite the backlash and Laura Loomer’s long track record of controversial behavior, Donald Trump appears to maintain a certain level of fondness for the far-right activist.
A friend of Trump’s told Mediaite that the former president enjoys Loomer’s content, even if he is aware of her unpredictability.
"He likes her content. But she’s a loose cannon. Really loose and a really big cannon. I’ve seen him with her and he likes her. His staff is probably freaking out that she’s going to go off the rails," the friend said.
Trump’s relationship with Loomer seems rooted in loyalty, as he has supported her during both of her unsuccessful runs for Congress.
The friend explained that Trump values loyalty above all else and sees Loomer as a "great warrior' who "goes to battle for him."
However, Loomer’s public displays of far-right conspiracy theories, including her propagation of the false claim that Haitian migrants were eating pets in Ohio, have drawn widespread criticism.
Many within Trump's campaign believe Loomer played a role in Trump’s reiteration of the pet-eating conspiracy during the recent ABC News debate, a move that was widely seen as a blunder within the campaign.
