WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump drew praise with a short but carefully chosen Bible reading that quickly lit up his supporters online.

The passage Trump selected dates back thousands of years but still carries relevance in today’s religious and political debates.

It comes from the often-cited 14th verse of the seventh chapter of 2 Chronicles and has been a go-to line for those who argue America was founded as a Christian nation and should remain one.

“And the Lord appeared to Solomon by night and said to him, I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place to myself for a house of sacrifice," Trump said, quoting from scripture during a roughly three-minute address.

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land,” the president said from behind the Resolute Desk.

The verse is rooted in the story of King Solomon and the dedication of the first temple in Jerusalem roughly 3,000 years ago. It is often used as a call for repentance and national renewal.

In its original context, it reflects a moment when Solomon asks for mercy for future generations who might stray, suffer consequences, and receive restoration if they turn back, according to the Associated Press.

Trump joins nationwide Bible-reading push event

Trump’s appearance wasn’t a one-off. In fact, he’s one of hundreds participating in a weeklong effort to read the entire Bible aloud.

Most readings are being held at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, but Trump joined remotely from the Oval Office via livestream.

It's worth noting that the same Chronicles passage Trump read has been a staple at National Day of Prayer events for decades. The observance was formalized by law in the 1980s and is held annually on the first Thursday in May.

Organizers of the “America Reads the Bible” marathon specifically invited Trump to read that verse. “It’s a powerful statement that he decided to read that passage,” said Bunni Pounds, founder of Christians Engaged, the group behind the project.

Trump supporters praise Bible reading online

It didn’t take long for Trump’s base to weigh in.

"A profound call to humility, repentance, and national renewal as we reflect on our founding ideals. Such a wise moment," one posted on X.

"This makes my heart happy. This is what is needed in this evil world! God bless President Trump. Amen," another gushed.

"Honoring the 250th anniversary by returning to the foundational texts," read a comment.

"Bible studies with the president! What a glorious time we live in!" someone else remarked.

"God saved him so he could save America, I truly believe that even if I don’t believe in all his politics the democrats were running our country towards damnation, Trump stepped in and stopped it for a while, but we must stay vigilant they will keep trying. Don’t stay home vote!" another offered.
