WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump’s reaction to the death of former special counsel Robert Mueller has provoked shock and outrage across political lines.

Trump publicly celebrated Mueller’s passing shortly after it was announced. The response from critics ranged from harsh rebukes to deep concern over the tone and implications of the president’s social media post.

Critics respond to Trump’s celebration of Robert Mueller’s death

Trump stunned observers when he openly celebrated the death of Mueller, writing on Truth Social, "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!"

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume wrote on X, “This is the kind of stuff Trump does that makes people not just oppose him but hate him. There was no need to say anything."

Trump’s estranged niece, Mary Trump, also took to X to criticize his comments, "Robert Mueller served his country honorably for decades. In response to his death, Donald wrote: "Good. I'm glad he's dead." If you think that's acceptable or even remotely ok, you are part of the problem."

Sen. Adam Schiff also called out Trump, "Every day, this president shows his basic indecency and unfitness for office."

Television personality Stephen A. Smith added his voice to the criticism,  "See……this is the B.S. I’m talking about. This is a disgusting thing coming from our Commander In Chief — especially about a VETERAN and PURPLE HEART recipient. #DamnShameful!"

Rep. Dan Goldman also commented, "We mourn the passing of Robert Mueller, a true public servant: bronze star Vietnam veteran, federal prosecutor, FBI Director, and impartial special counsel. Yet the President of the United States disgustingly celebrates Mueller’s death simply because he exposed Trump’s efforts to steal the 2016 election."

Robert Mueller’s legacy and investigation into 2016 election interference

Mueller’s family confirmed on Saturday, “With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away” on Friday night and "asked that their privacy be respected." He died at the age of 81 following a years‑long battle with Parkinson’s disease. MS NOW first reported news about his demise.

Mueller’s role as a former special counsel and head of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election was central to his public profile.

In that capacity, he oversaw a highly scrutinized investigation into alleged Russian efforts to influence the election and potential connections to Trump’s campaign, an inquiry that Trump had repeatedly denounced during his presidency as a “witch hunt.”

Mueller’s investigation determined that Russia had interfered in the election to benefit Trump and that the Trump campaign had welcomed this assistance. However, Mueller and his team found insufficient evidence of a criminal conspiracy and did not reach a prosecutorial conclusion regarding whether he had obstructed justice.

Mueller filed criminal charges against six of the president’s associates, including his campaign chairman and his first national security adviser. Mueller pointedly stated in 448 page report, “If we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the president clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state."

He continued, "Based on the facts and the applicable legal standards, however, we are unable to reach that judgment.”
