Wendy Williams says life after Kevin Hunter divorce was '100% fabulous': 'Just me and my cats'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Wendy Williams has broken her silence about her divorce in a rare and emotional interview.
Speaking with 'The Breakfast Club' on January 16, Williams reflected on her life after her high-profile divorce from Kevin Hunter in 2020.
Wendy Williams on her newfound independence after divorce
Opening up about her life after the split, Wendy Williams said, “Getting divorced was, as far as I’m concerned, a 100% fabulous thing."
The split ended a 21-year marriage that was marred by allegations of infidelity and secrecy, according to People.
"When I got divorced, I moved to New York, as opposed to New Jersey," Williams shared. “I was solo, just me and my cats.”
As Williams is currently under guardianship, she no longer owns pets.
Wendy Williams and Kevin Hunter's tumultuous marriage and public scandal
Wendy Williams’ divorce from Kevin Hunter was finalized in 2020, following revelations that Hunter had fathered a child with another woman.
At the time, a representative for Williams stated, “Kevin is supportive of Wendy, and they are working through this process together.”
Williams later accused Hunter of infidelity, a claim he acknowledged partially by apologizing for his “wrongs,” though he never confirmed fathering a child.
The pair, who wed in 1997, share one son, Kevin Hunter Jr, now 23.
Williams acknowledged that the divorce was essential for reclaiming her life and prioritizing her personal growth.
Wendy Williams' career and financial challenges
During the interview, Wendy Williams reflected on her career, revealing that her talk show became more about financial security than passion toward the end.
“For me, being on TV, I’m not going to lie, that was about money,” she confessed.
Williams hinted at her preference for radio, calling it “a Godsend.” Her radio career, which predates her TV fame, is where she felt most at home creatively.
Despite her professional achievements, Williams faced financial challenges after her accounts were frozen by Wells Fargo in 2022. A court-appointed guardianship was put in place, citing concerns about her mental health.
Wendy Williams' dementia diagnosis and family struggles
In February 2024, Wendy Williams’ team revealed her diagnosis of progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a rare condition impacting speech, cognition, and behavior.
This marked a significant shift in her public narrative, as the once outspoken star now grapples with debilitating health challenges. Williams’ family has publicly criticized the guardianship, claiming it has isolated her from loved ones.
Her niece, Alex Finnie, revealed, “She can call us, but we can’t call her. That’s been the reality since 2023.”

Finnie also shared concerns about Williams’ living conditions under guardianship. “She’s not getting proper sunlight or care,” she said, describing a heavily monitored environment that limits Williams’ interactions.
