White House's jaw-dropping Rubio birthday surprise resurfaces after months in hiding
WASHINGTON,DC: Marco Rubio may have hoped the internet would eventually move on from the photo that turned him into a meme, but the White House clearly had other plans.
For his 55th birthday, Rubio was handed a framed collection featuring dozens of bizarre versions of his now-famous 'realizing' expression.
The gift was apparently presented months ago, but it resurfaced online on Wednesday, August 12 photo giving the joke a second life online.

White House's unique birthday gift for Rubio
The birthday gift is essentially a framed tour through the internet’s imagination.
The large golden-framed collage contains 68 separate images of Rubio, each built around the same familiar photograph of the secretary of state sitting on a couch with his hands clasped and an unmistakably weary expression.
But instead of leaving him in the Oval Office, the meme-makers have placed Rubio in just about every job, profession and fictional universe imaginable.
Among the versions included in the collage are Rubio dressed as an Iranian ayatollah, a Star Wars rebel on the ice planet Hoth, Robocop, an astronaut and even the White House Easter bunny.
The White House presented the unusual gift to Rubio in May for his 55th birthday.
It only became public months later, after Axios reporter Marc Caputo posted an image of the framed artwork on X on Wednesday.
The frame is also covered with signatures from administration officials.
President Donald Trump added his own message in gold ink above his signature writing “You are great.”

From Iran’s ayatollah to a Pope
The meme began with one photograph, but it quickly became an ongoing internet series.
The original image was taken on February 28, 2025, when Trump, Vice President JD Vance and senior administration officials met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
Rubio was sitting on a couch during the meeting, his fingers interlocked and his body slightly slumped forward.
The photograph itself was ordinary enough.

The internet, however, saw something else: a man who appeared to be silently realizing that yet another responsibility had just landed on his desk.
From there, 'Marco Rubio realizing' became a template.
The edits started attaching increasingly absurd jobs and titles to the secretary of state.
At one point, Rubio was transformed into the supposed governor of Greenland. In another, he appeared as the shah of Iran. Then came the pope.
Rubio has previously explained that his unusual posture in the original photograph was not meant to convey some profound political realization.
He simply did not have a pillow behind his back and gradually sank into the couch.
The White House birthday gift suggests the meme has now gone well beyond social media.
Rubio’s viral alter ego has clearly become an unofficial running joke inside the administration itself.
