Whoopi Goldberg defends Taylor Swift urging critics to 'grow up' amid blame for Travis Kelce's slow start
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Whoopi Goldberg came to Taylor Swift's defense after Kansas City Chiefs fans attempted to blame the singer for Travis Kelce's slow start to the NFL season
During a recent episode of 'The View', the hosts discussed how some fans are pointing fingers at Swift, suggesting her relationship with Kelce is impacting his performance.
Whoopi Goldberg reminds fans of Travis Kelce's Super Bowl impact
Whoopi Goldberg noted that fans seem to have forgotten Travis Kelce was a key player in the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory last year. She emphasized, “Apparently they forgot that they won the Super Bowl last year with [Kelce] and they were just as tight then as they are now.”
Despite the Chiefs winning all three of their games this season, Kelce has recorded only eight catches for 69 yards and no touchdowns so far.
Swift has been a visible supporter of Kelce, attending his first two games but skipping the most recent matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, which ended in a 22-17 victory for the Chiefs.
Alyssa Farah Griffin, a Swift fan on the show, highlighted that football is ultimately a team sport, arguing that Kelce’s lack of touchdowns doesn't take away from his contributions to the team's overall success.
“As I understand it, football is a team sport, so just because [Kelce’s] not making touchdowns doesn’t mean he’s not contributing to the success of the team. They’re currently undefeated this season, and once again, just the classic blaming a woman,” she remarked.
Whoopi Goldberg defends Taylor Swift and slams critics over backlash
Whoopi Goldberg also criticized the online backlash Taylor Swift is facing, suggesting it stems from a politically charged environment, referencing "the crazy MAGA people" upset over Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election.
She stated, “This is a guy who’s doing movies now, he’s doing television commercials, he’s doing all kinds of stuff. He might have been a little busy, and maybe he’s not 12 anymore. He’s still a valuable player.”
Goldberg wrapped up with a direct message to the critics, saying, “Grow up, y’all! Stop putting this on her. Your team is fine. Your team is doing well, so shut up!”
In the aftermath of the game against the Falcons, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes addressed Kelce’s performance, acknowledging that there is increased defensive attention on him.
“The respect factor [teams] have for Travis is just unreal. We’re calling a lot of plays for Travis and it’s like two or three people are going to him,” Mahomes said.
He added, “He understands. That’s the great thing about him, is he wants to make an impact on the game, but he wants to win at the end of the day. I’m gonna try my best to keep feeding him the ball whenever he’s there and whenever he’s open.”
