Zohran Mamdani and his wife Rama Duwaji move into Gracie Mansion, float plans for bathroom upgrades
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and first lady Rama Duwaji officially took up residence at Gracie Mansion on Monday, January 12, and the newly arrived couple is already discussing potential updates to the historic home, including changes to its bathrooms.
Speaking outside the Upper East Side residence, Mamdani said one of the ideas under consideration is the installation of bidets.
“One thing that we will change is we will be installing a few bidets into Gracie Mansion,” the mayor said, adding that the plan remains aspirational. “We’ll see if we can actually get it done.”

Zohran Mamdani vows to stick to his stances
Mamdani emphasized that moving into the 227-year-old mansion would not alter his approach to public life or how he engages with the city.
He said he plans to continue commuting by subway, bus, and Citi Bike, despite relocating to the official mayoral residence near Carl Schurz Park on the Upper East Side.
“While there is no security deposit being put down today, Rama and I intend to strive each day to be the best possible custodians of this beautiful home,” Mamdani said. “We know that we are only its temporary occupants.”
He added that stewardship of the mansion goes beyond cosmetic changes and includes making the space more reflective of the city it represents.
“That doesn’t just mean a new coat of paint. It means being intentional about how this historic property represents the civic fabric of the city and opening it up to New Yorkers who don’t often get to visit places like this,” the 34-year-old stressed.
On X, Mamdani posted pictures and wrote, “Rama and I feel lucky to be starting a new chapter the way so many New Yorkers have, by moving to a new part of the city.”
"We’re grateful for the welcome to the UES and humbled to be tenants of Gracie Mansion, a home that belongs to the people," the democratic socialist added.

Zohran Mamdani jokes about Gracie Mansion's ghost
The mayor appeared relaxed during the move-in process, joking about former Mayor Eric Adams’ claims that Gracie Mansion is haunted.
“I haven’t yet met the ghost or heard from the ghost,” Mamdani said.
He also revealed that the household may soon gain a pet, if his health cooperates.
“I am currently getting my allergy shots so that I can fight off my allergy to cats,” Mamdani said. “That’s the hope.”
Zohran Mamdani moves after months of uncertainty
Mamdani had avoided confirming whether he would move into Gracie Mansion following his November win, raising questions about whether he would remain in his rent-stabilized Astoria apartment, which reportedly costs $2,300 a month.
According to reports, his wife, Duwaji, appeared hesitant about trading Queens for the Upper East Side.
The couple ultimately decided to relocate, citing security concerns.
